OK not AFI, me. As a rule I hate remakes, and currently Hollyweird is in such a pathetic rut-I mean they are remaking HORRIBLE tv shows, or movies that were perfect the first go around
. BUT there have been a few(very few) times a remake was as good as the original or added something. So heres my list, feel free to add yours.

Movies-

The Thing(John Carpenter version)- One of my fave sci-fi/horrors films and one of Carpenters best. I know James Arness looking like Herman Munster was scary at one time, but Rob Bottins alien designs are still creepy and out of the world. Nice nihhilistic ending too.

Cape Fear- Scorcese and Deniro(before he became the self-parody he currently is) did a GREAT update, w/ better developed characters and some plain disturbing scenes.

GINO- Just kidding!

TV series-

The Fugitive- Great all around film!
The Brady Bunch Movie- Just fun cuz it didnt take itself too seriously. And Gary Cole(from Office Space among others) is hilarious!

The Fly (1986)-David Cronenberg offers a completely different take on the 1958 classic with a gradual transformation into the hideous title character. Goldblum and Geena Davis had nice chemistry and the FX by Chris Walas were superb.

The Blob (1988)-I've said it before and I'll say it again: Kevin Dillon is no Steve McQueen. But he, along with Shawnee Smith, did a good job as the teens out to stop the trecherous pink goo that dissolves its way through hapless townspeople.

Willard (2003)-Okay, here's the thing. I've never seen the original, but this film was very damn good. Crispin Glover brought an incredible personality to the role which is the highlight.

I agree with Cape Fear and The Thing. Both rocked. As a kid I remember seeing a tv remake of The Night of the Hunter starring Richard Chamberlain as the evil preacher, a role originally brought to life by the great Robert Mitchum. I remember that I liked the movie but that was soooo many years ago I figure my opinion would be different today if I saw it again.

I'd say the Dawn of the Dead remake was pretty good. I wasn't expecting much going in the theater to see it, but was suprised by it.

I wholeheartedly agree with John Carpenters re-make of The Thing and would like to add one of my personal favorites, the '78 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers... the whole movie was just so...wierd...and it had a great downbeat ending, I haven't looked at people the same since. As for remade T.V. shows, my vote would go to Battlestar Galactica. Really well done, imo.

Klownzilla and Newell I TOTALLY agree. And darn it Klown I should have mentioned The Fly and The Blob-they are some of my all time faves. All the above can stand on their own. I think The Blob was written by Frank Darabount, and is sadly often overlooked.

And Gwangi as soon as I figure out how to bend light and complete my time travel experiments, the 60s Raquel Welch will be mine. Oh yes..she will be mine...
