Robot Jox

Anyone else seen this 1991 (presumably straight-to-video) movie? I just rented it and watched it for the firest time. It seems to have invoked quite the dual reaction - some love it, most hate it. I wondered what others thought of its campy goodness - I thought it reminded me a lot of Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 1993, but more enjoyable. The flying fist of doom, the groin-chainsaw, the smooshed fight attendees...all too good. And the Russian villain who was so over the top reminded me of "Crazy Gideon", a local electronics shop owner who broadcasts his commercials wherein he proclaims his insanity.

Actually, I did see this in a theater in 1990 or 91 (Drexel North, Columbus OH). I was really into MechWarrior boardgames at the time, and thought "Wow! This is perfect!".

Wow, was I disappointed! But I wouldn't mind seeing it again to see if I appreciate the campiness this time 'round.

I remember when I saw it, I saw a preview for the anime film "Lensman" (famous EE Doc Smith novel), but I don't think it ever played. Need to track these down, thanks for the reminder!

i saw it in the theater as well and enjoyed it to a degree. nice to see stop-motion on the big screen, as always. could have been better, but all in all a nice movie.

never saw the semi-sequel, ROBOT WARS though.

I loved Robot Jox! One of the best things Charles Band has ever done, and the production values are surprisingly good (one of the reasons Empire Films went bankrupt, I suppose)! It's basically Gundam meets Rollerball! The robot scenes are definitely a highlight!

I also got to meet Gary Graham last year at DragonCon! When I told him about Robot Jox and his role (the main character, Achilles), he said "You're the man!" A real gentleman!

Paul Koslo was great as Alexander, and Ann-Marie Johnson was very beautiful playing Athena!

This definitely screams for a DVD release! Last I remembered, Columbia/Tri-Star has the video rights. (The VHS cover art was superior, IMHO, to the original movie poster art, which made this out to look like a RoboCop/Terminator ripoff.) Maybe they'll get to it, hopefully with a widescreen transfer (I saw Bandai/Emotion's promo for it, and it was in widescreen).

Robot Wars sucked. The robot scenes being the only good thing about it.

This is one of Stuart Gordon movies that I've been tracking down, but failed to come across. Maybe I'll find it at the horror con in a few weeks. There's a sequel called Robot Wars also from Charles Band, but no involvement from Gordon.

Robot Wars SUCKED. Leave it at that.

I loved Robot Jox, still have my old VHS from way back. Such an entertaining film for me as a small child, only made my love for large mecha/monsters grow. Speaking of which...I should dig that out and watch it again....
