Superman Returns (2006)

According to , Superman Returns has earned $182,726,451 worldwide as of July 11th.

Very good for two weeks, especially considering that it's up against the record-shattering Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as of its second weekend in release.

Just under $147m as of 7/11, 14 days into release. It's now running $24m behind War of the Worlds, which means Superman is losing ground compared to WOTW.

Still, I think it's got a good chance to beat $200m. There don't look to be any more blockbuster releases for the rest of this summer, whereas WOTW ran up against Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers in its 3rd week of release. (I could be wrong, but I don't see Dupree doing the kind of business that Wedding Crashers did, and the Miami Vice movie is about 2 years too late.)

Unfortunately, unless this movie does really well overseas, limping across the $200m mark may not necessarily justify a sequel.

I finally saw this tonight, and it is simply awesome. Bryan Singer has delivered another outstanding entry in the comic book superhero movie genre. Everything about the movie was nailed spot-on. The acting, excellent. The characters, well-developed and memorable. The direction, masterful. The screenwriting, magnificent. The special effects, mesmerizing. The music score, fantastic. The action and excitement, thrilling. The overall production, incredible. I simply can't throw enough positive adjectives at this movie. It's simply an astonishing movie that should be viewed by everybody. And I loved all of the subtle nods to the previous Superman films.

As a movie, I give Superman Returns 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I would rank this film among the greatest comic book superhero movies of all time, along with Superman, Superman II, Batman, Batman Returns, X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Spider-Man, and Spider-Man 2.

Singer sees 'Superman' sequel for summer '09

SAN DIEGO -- If director Bryan Singer has his way, Superman will take to the air a second time.

Singer, who directed the current "Superman Returns," told fans Friday at Comic-Con International, that he has had discussions with Warner Bros. Pictures about directing a sequel for release in the summer of 2009.

"Superman Returns," starring Brandon Routh, has grossed $169 million domestically to date, a figure that has been regarded by some observers as a disappointment given the movie's production costs of more than $200 million.

But while Singer stressed that plans for the sequel are still tentative, he expressed his interests in keeping the franchise aloft.

"I plan to get all 'Wrath of Khan' on it," Singer said -- a reference to 1982's "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan," which is generally considered as having breathed life into the "Star Trek" franchise after 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" suffered critical barbs. "We haven't concluded a deal. That's always iffy," Singer added. "The intention is to do it for 2009."

Of the two Superman movies of last year, I think "Hollywoodland" was the better movie than "Superman Returns." Granted, "Hollywoodland" wasn't really a Superman move, per se. But as far as story-telling and acting, "Hollywoodland" is much better a film than "Superman Returns." This also takes into account all are gripes people had about the facts and fictionalization of George Reeves's life. I was initally disappointed in "Hollywoodland" at first, but I've come around to it and favor it more. "Superman Returns" was a flat-out disappointment. I didn't even bother to buy it (I only bought the first Reeve Superman movie).

The actors (Routh and Bosworth) were much too young to be believable. After Superman and Lois had their tryst at the Fortress of Solitude ("Superman 2"), Superman leaves Earth for five years searching for the remnants of Krypton. In the meantime, Lois has a baby, conceived during the Fortress sleep-over. Yet when Superman comes back to Earth, both he and Lois look as if they just got out of high school. The whole thing would have worked better for me had it been Superboy knocking-up Lois Lane and splitting from Earth.

Ben Affleck didn't really resemble Reeves, but he did a well as he could and was a bit more believable. My problem was that HE wasn't aged in the movie. He only had slight tinges of gray in his hair at the end, nothing else. - A.

sorry but I thought Hollywoodlnd sucked big time.It was a movie in search of a scandal or some period piece glory days of hollywood depth. And casting Affleck for anything distracts cuz hes such a boring manneqin. Everyone was ill cast, especially Brody(actually what IS he appropriate for?). But I agree with you on returns casing age wise. I only give them a little slack in that Superman is incredibly hard to cast right, and Routh did pretty darn good, considering hes filling Reeves shoes(continuity wise)

Just curious, am I the only one that doesn't think Bryan Singer is as great as a director as he's hyped up to be, at least when it comes to comic adaptations.

X-Men and X-Men 2 were decent but I wouldn't place them among the cream of the comic book movie crop. I think its the "gotta be realistic" theme for used for the all heroes & villains that hampers the movies the most [although I did think both Professer X and Magneto were well portrayed].

And then there's Superman Returns a so-so movie but again it has problems:

And as for the movie's core plot, well once again it seems that something was borrowed from Doc Savage. In the Doc Savage story Fortress of Solitude (:!: let it sink in) the villain breaks into the Man of Bronze's Fortress of Solitude and steals the technology therein. This stolen tech is not only used in the villain's own benefit but intended to be sold to high paying criminal elements around the world.
