Dang, that was an nice ride. The movie begins with a note card pretty much praising the Man of Steel, and then when scientists pinpoint the area of his birthhome, Krytpon, Superman myseteriously vanished in thin air. Cue: the John Williams "Superman" theme with the regular font type of opening credits. Spiffy. Next, five years later, we meet Kevin Spacey as Luthor, then Aunt May is visited by another meteorite crashing down to Earth, revealing her good ol' son, Clark Kent. Thus begins the rest of the movie.
And it was good. Just good. Not spectacular as I thought it would be. It was just good. It was like the original "X-Men", pretty niffty but not exceptional. Heck, I think the "Spider-Man 3" trailer got more excitment than the film. Yes to all, Brandon Routh is very good at playing his part (though it could help that Clark hardly says anything, and all Superman really does is give happy stares and cries in anguish during the Lex/Supey clash). Kate Bosworth, other then being extremely good looking, is great as Lois Lane. Growing up with Erica Durance and Teri Hatcher as Lois, though, it just didn't feel right to me; at least she was better (or differeant's a better phrase) then Margot Kidder, who I personally dislike. Kevin Spacey = whole reason to see this film. He's awesome, and he has the best lines EVER.
Similar to "King Kong", it's running time goes by like air because you're invested in everything. One thing that I liked was after a feet to destroy New Krypton, Superman kinda falls on Death's doors for a little while, and is rushed to the Hospital. I like that sort of grounded-to-reality idea, that all these people love their savior and thousands wait outside the Hospital praying for him to get better. And of course, out of all the people who get to go in to see him,it's Lois, because, as James Marsden nicely put it, "You're Lois Lane."
"Superman Returns" had spiffy action and special effects, and was aided quite well by John Ottoman's music (who, oddly enough, is also credited as editor). Highly Recommended. I just don't think it lives up to the hype. * * */ * * * *
