First question everyone asked when seeing the Dumbo trailer- "where's Timothy Q. Mouse",
First Question everyone asks when seeing this trailer - "Where's Mushu?"
Trying to make it more *historically accurate* is fine and all...but cute little creatures put kids (and by default parents) butts in seats. I see this doing about as well as Dumbo...

Supposedly, they're replacing Mushu with a phoenix. We'll see how that turns out.
I liked the original Disney film, but this one looks even closer to my tastes. If the next few trailers look just as good as the teaser, I'll definitely go and see the movie.

It's interesting that this first trailer pitches it as a straight drama, since that's what the original Mulan teaser did too.
It was only in the later trailers that they revealed the sassy Eddie Murphy dragon and songs. I remember being excited at the prospect of Disney doing an animated drama, and rolling my eyes when the typical cartoony and musical tropes reared their head (I was a teenage edgelord at the time, sue me). It will interesting to see if Disney are pulling a similar bait-and-switch with this remake, or if it will be as slavishly conservative as their last few remakes.
One thing that caught my eye: the shot at 0:06 where she's on horseback. It's hard to make out, but doesn't it look like she's wearing a modern jacket and jeans?

This is the most interesting looking of Disney's remakes in a good while. Looks like a proper wuxia movie.

I'm not really a Disney fan per se, but there seems to be a lot of inconsistency here, granted, audience fickleness doesn't help. There are a lot of people saying they don't *want* shot-for-shot live-action remakes of the animated films, but those are the ones that seem to do the best Box Office wise (Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, and *seemingly* Lion King *have to wait and see on that one). Although this whole thing started with diverging from the source material quite a bit (Maleficent & Alice in Wonderland) were both pretty successful despite drastic changes.
I'm not saying changing Mulan wont work, but Disney's inconsistency just seems to be annoying. Either make them ALL faithful to the original, or make them ALL original new takes. Deciding what works and doesn't all *willy nilly* only confuses and frustrates audiences. I know a lot of people that like Dumbo, they just didn't like how much was left out from the original animated classic, or changed, thus it didn't do well. It seems pretty obvious that Disney's goal is to remake ALL their animated classic films in live Action. Sure some are higher priorities than others, but they will all happen eventually, to varying degrees of success. What we dont need are sequels. Why another Maleficent? (Did the *Alice* Sequel teach Disney nothing)? Also in doing research for this post I had forgotten there was a Snow White/Huntsman movie, and didn't even know there was a sequel!

^ I am totally against the idea of beat for beat remakes. What's the point? Readapting the story from scratch and merely adding a little extra flavor from the previous Disney adaptation is definitely the way to go, and that's certainly was so in the case of Cinderella and The Jungle Book, the best of the remakes so far.
