So Harmy, the guy responsible for the amazing Star Wars Despecialized Trilogy, recently restored this really awesome vintage BBC documentary about special effects. It’s all about Industrial Light and Magic and how they did effects for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, 2010: The Year We Make Contact and such. It’s AMAZING.

If you’ve ever wondered how *exactly* compsiting with an optical printer works, or how they inserted those live action scenes into matte paintings you NEED to see this. It’s an absolute treasure trove of information about what I think are still some of the best effects ever put to film. It’s also a nostalgic look back at the true craftsmanship and amazing skill that is rapidly becoming a dying art as computers make all this SOOO much easier.

In it he does a nice job introducing the video and then also explains the differences between the two different restored versions he’s made. Of course, he also explains the lengths he went to in order to restore the video which is cool too.

Computers may have made special effects work much, much, much easier by an order of magnitudes, but it also made the behind-the-scenes documentaries a lot more boring, right?

What was AMC's special effects documentary show in the 90s? I was devoted to that shows a kid! I have this memory, I believe it is not one of those false memories, of seeing behind-the-scenes into how the costumes for the third NeverEnding Story movie were made, and it seemed the actual film was dumped direct-to-video years later.
