I didn't find a thread for this movie and it's one that a lot of you folks would probably like. It isn't playing in a super-saturated release; it opened in a little over 2,300 theaters and it's been gradually expanding to more than 2,400 over the past few weeks.

Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) directs a cast led by Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker in this first contact drama. It's the kind of film that's best experienced knowing as little about it as possible but if that description isn't enough for you, the domestic trailer is suitably spoiler-free and really sells the picture:

This is one of the best movies of the year. I recommend seeking it out if you're lucky enough to have it playing near you.

i saw this and really enjoyed the film. Solid, highbrow, dramatic scifi.

Saw it. Loved it. One of my top films of the year. I thought it was really well constructed, spectacularly directed, with great performances, and a final question/moral that will leave you thinking/talking.

It's a TAD slow in the middle, but that just means it's not my FAVORITE film of the year. It's damn good though.

I caught this movie earlier in the week and it's definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a while, and probably my favourite of the year (Shin-Godzilla is up there too, of course). I enjoyed the subtle buildup and excellent atmosphere, without any of it feeling slow or dragging. The music was amazing as well. My friend made the comparison to Contact, and I can see that.
