Guillermo del Toro starts filming his new movie today, which is apparently about a woman who falls in love with a mysterious creature. It has an excellent cast: Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones (as the creature!), Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer.

Ha! Typical GDT. Not anything he's announced or talked about since his last project.

I look forward to this as I enjoy his movies, but it's just amusing to me

^He tweeted a few days ago (I think) that the irony isn't lost on him that the one project that hasn't had an announcement or press release of some kind behind it is actually the one going into production.

Mike Hill designed the film's creature (in tandem with Legacy FX), which is supposedly a merman -

Del Toro and Jones have history depicting mermen of course...

I can't wait to see how they'll differentiate the design - I mean, Doug's already played a merman in a GDT movie! Apparently Guillermo has spent more time designing this creature than any other one creature for his movies.

CAN - NOT - EFFING - WAIT

The 'Hellboy' actor plays a fish-man in the Cold War-centric drama, and he has a bold prediction for how the film will be received.

Can't wait to see what Doug's fishman looks like.

... also: release date. Wanna know that. GDT tweeted that we should be getting updates on several of his projects (Shape of Water, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Trollhunters Season 2) soon. Hopefully we'll get it then?

Hell yeah! Can't wait to see this movie!

It seems GDT's entered a bit of a romantic phase. His last film was a romance (rather unfortunately marketed as a horror film). Come to think of it; the Hellboy films hinged a lot on the romance between HB and Liz, too.

The teaser for The Shape of Water is playing in front of War For the Planet of the Apes but isn't online yet.

What is this, 10 years ago or somethin' ?

This definitely looks like a stealth Hellboy spin-off. Also, be warned: this is one of those trailers that feels like it shows you the whole damn movie. I stopped it at the 2 minute mark, and wish I'd done so a good 30 seconds earlier.

This just looks lovely. It's a bit Abe Sapien, but just as much Creature From the Black Lagoon. Visually it feels closest to The Devil's Backbone with a smattering of Jeunet's City of Lost Children and Amélie .

I think this looks really, really, really good.
:D

Dang, this is a good year for movies!

ok...initially I would have had no interest in this, but man...this looks like a wonderful story, I'm all in. Also I love how GDT hires what I call "Real" people to act in his films. People that at first glance are not super-models or hunky Hollywood type guys, but I love the casting in this film, all these people have an inner beauty that is much more than just what you see on the surface.

Umm...I know its just fantasy and all...but if that last part is accurate, then that is a deal breaker for me...Kind of killed all the innocence and friendship I thought they were going for.

Dude, they kiss in the trailer.

I mean, who knows how chaste it'll be portrayed on screen, but I think its explicitly a romance.
