2016 in film

Postby tbeasley » Thu Jul 14, 2016 8:07 pm

I didn't see a 'best and worst' thread for this year so I apologize if I missed it.

Without bumping a bunch of threads I thought I'd just put one of these together. We're about midway through the year so what have been your favorites so far? Least favorites?

For me, starting with what I really liked down...
The Witch
Green Room
The BFG
10 Cloverfield Lane
The Jungle Book
Captain America: Civil War
The Legend of Tarzan
X-Men: Apocalypse
Warcraft
Deadpool
Gods of Egypt
Jane Got a Gun
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
~ Tyler

Exterminate all rational thought.

I've been rather lukewarm on films this year. Civil War was fun, but I found it a bit forgettable, like a sugar rush that wore off after the fact. I really liked The Jungle Book and Kubo. Kubo's probably my favorite so far. It seems family films were the real standout quality-wise this year. Still need to see The Witch. I see High Rise is now on Netflix; missed that one, too.

2017 is looking really great, though: Kong, the Godzilla anime, Baby Driver (Edgar Wright's new film), The Shape of Water (GDT's new film), Okja (Bong Joon-ho's new film), Guardians of the Galaxy 2, War For the Planet of the Apes... it's jam packed!

It's been a bad year for blockbusters but a pretty good year for smaller movies and quite a good year for horror.

I think my favorite movie at the moment might be The Nice Guys.

2016 has been a very unusual year. Overly saturated with potential blockbusters, and several of them falling flat, and the ones that are really popular, in some cases, are just not the type of thing I am into....I have seen several of the sequel/reboot /franchise failures....Sad to say there are really only 2 films of the top of my mind I actually enjoyed.

Captain America: Civil War
-though even I find myself wanting often to only watch the 15 minute airport scene...that gives me concerns &
TMNT: Out of the Shadows. --Yes I know it had all kinds of problems, but I had fun with it, and walked out in a pleasant mood.

BvS had incredible FX (sans Doomsday), and great action sequences, but it made me depressed, not how I want to feel coming out of a superhero film. ID4:R was just lame. Surprisingly I haven't taken my kids to see any of the big animated films this year, I was never a big fan of Nemo, so we skipped Dory. Life of Pets...we might see at the budget theater when that comes around. Zootopia (I forget this was 2016, thought it was an older film) was pretty good, and is now on Netflix.

I never thought I would say this...but I can possibly see the day I stop going to Superhero films, and possibly in the next 5 years or so, going to theaters altogether. I used to go on average about 5-7 times a year...This year I have only been to the "Big" theater in my area 3 times, and 2 of those were special Rifftrax events (the other was Civil War). I anticipate seeing Shin Godzilla & Rogue One to finish the year, and that's about it.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

^ I've seen far more Fathom Events screenings of classic films and Rifftrax live then actual new films this year.

The VVitch
Deadpool
Green Room
The Jungle Book
X-Men: Apocalypse
The Nice Guys
Tex Montana Will Survive
Hardcore Henry

Right now that's my list, in no particular order, and with the admission that at least two of those are just my pure personal preference, and not due to the movie itself being objectively anything great or special (Apocalypse and Hardcore Henry). I haven't seen SO much still, though: Keanu, Money Monster, Neon Demon, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Conjuring 2, Warcraft, Free State of Jones, Finding Dory, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Shallows, The BFG, The Purge: Election Year, Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out, Don't Breathe, Pete's Dragon, Sausage Party, Kubo and the Two Strings, Morgan, Sully, Snowden, Swiss Army Man...

So far this year I have seen:

The Boy
Hail, Caesar
Deadpool
The Witch
God's of Egypt
Zootopia
Batman v. Superman
Hardcore Henry
The Jungle Book
X men
Captain America civil war
The Nice Guys
Independence day resurgence
the shallows
finding dory
The conjuring 2
The secret life of pets
Ghostbusters
Stars Trek Beyond
Jason Bourne
Suicide Squad
Kubo and the two strings
Morgan
Don't Breathe
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Meet the Blacks
The Forest

The best of the year is a three way tie between Civil War, Kubo, and The Nice Guys.

The worst of the year is hands down Meet the Blacks, with The Boy and Gods of Egypt following that.

Come to think of it: the resurgence of horror might be the film story of the year, moreso than all the think pieces on the somewhat tepid response to traditional blockbusters.
