John McClane became a hero after the Nakatomi Plaza hostage crisis. Before that he was just a cop from NY. There's no pre-Nakatomi John McClane story that would be bigger than the Law section of an average episode of Law and Order.

I hope it's not the story from the comic...
The prequel approach is probably entirely designed to keep the franchise going without Bruce Willis. It seemed like maybe they were trying to pass the torch to Jai Courtney in Die Hard 5 as John's secret agent son Jack, but that movie was rough.

Yeah, I don't HATE Live Free the way a lot of people do; I don't LOVE it, but it's fun.
A Good Day though...might have the worst car chase I've ever seen
