He's also writing it. AKA, 15 death stars and the plot of ROTJ, here we come.

Not terribly inspiring, but in retrospect an obvious choice for the studio.

The biggest disappointment here is that Abrams himself has admitted that when he did everything in Force Awakens that felt like a set up and required future answers, he didn't know where it was going. There aren't any plans for the story...that's a problem.

But Abrams is a capable director. I just wish he weren't writing.

ok, here's what I don't get....way back in 2015...before TFA came out, there was an interview with JJ where he had "Read the Screenplay" for episode VIII, and said he loved it more so than VII, and wished he was directing it (I wish I could find this interview)...so this leads me to a couple of questions....

1. Are the directors really out of sync, or is that just what people are speculating?
2. Was the screenplay that JJ read completely changed by Rian Johnson into something else?
3. If the screenplay for VIII existed before VII came out, how is it that supposedly JJ is just pitching IX now to Disney?...

In any case, I don't think Disney would have chosen JJ just to come in and "undo" again what people are saying Rian Johnson undid with VIII. While all the minutiae has not been worked out yet, I'm sure the overall *Grand Plan* for this sequel Trilogy was completed long ago, and these directors while putting their own spin on things, are not really inventing the story as they go, even though it may seem that way.

To be sure there are things I like about the film, and things I don't. A lot of people argue *what* Star wars is all about. It has many layers, and central characters to be sure. But to me it all boiled down to one...LUKE SKYWALKER. I know Lucas himself said it was really all about Anakin/Vader, but that was I think to give his prequel trilogy more significance. He may have had some grand plan of 9 or even 12 movies at one point (to mimic the amount of chapters of the serials of old). But all that was necessary in the beginning was 3 films. But in 1980 when ESB came out with an "Episode V" title, and ANH was re-released in 1981 with an "Episode IV" moniker, the fan *need* to see I-III was then created. Lucas himself became tired and decided that six films was enough, and the EU novels served nicely for over 2 decades of building on what the films started. But we can all admit since the mouse bought his baby for 4 BIL back in 2013, that vision no longer exists, and things have changed. The fact that SW is not about LUKE anymore saddens me a bit. I don't know exactly what it is about, I guess that's my biggest disappointment.
