^That is quite literally the first horror film I ever saw (at least all the way through). I was a real scaredy cat as a kid. Sci-fi and fantasy was okay (my favorite, actually), though I had to look away during, say, the entire ark scene in Raiders or the library ghost in Ghostbusters - but anything with the primary focus of scaring? I wasn't having any of it. Vampires in particular frightened me more than anything. For some reason the elves in The Santa Clause gave me nightmares.
... then, I hit the age of 11 and it was like a switch had be pulled and I no longer minded. It was AMC's 1999 Monsterfest, and I just decided I would watch as much of everything as possible. It was mostly Universal, Hammer, AIP stuff (as well as some Godzilla and Harryhausen!), but this just so happens to have been the first one of those movies I watched. Maybe that's the reason I always had a fondness for werewolves after that, even though there are only a few really good werewolf movies. My favorites of them are The Wolf Man, Curse of the Werewolf, and An American Werewolf in London.
Oh, and I have a confession to make: I still haven't seen The Howling. Love werewolves, love Joe Dante, decades of meaning to see it and never getting around to it.

Two good werewolf movies were made just last year.
Wolfcop - which is a "so bad it's good" kinda thing, so maybe not for everyone.
Late Phases - great little flick starring Nick Damici of Stake Land. The wolf design isn't great but the movie has some good scares AND funny moments.

Another vote here for Dog Soldiers. First rate movie. A nod should also be given not only to American Werewolf, like Tom said, but also to the Howling. Those two changed the genre with their amazing practical effects (praise be given to Rob Bottin and Rick Baker).

^ Those three come to mind for me. As a young lad I was a big fan of "I was a Teenage Werewolf"

I thought Dog Soldiers sucked. I sorta enjoyed it for the effects, but it wasn't a GOOD movie to me. I'd put it about on a level with Bad Moon, but I enjoyed Bad Moon more because I had no expectations for it when I saw it. I heard so many good things about Dog Soldiers and I was really disappointed when the only thing that was GOOD was the creature design.
But I do love Ginger Snaps.
Also special shoutout to:
Werewolf of London - THE original werewolf movie, and pretty good, honestly. Even though it came before everything else, it's got some twists on the mythos that none of the others have so it feels really unique and original.
Also, I have some definite guilty pleasures in the werewolf genre.
Howling 2 - It's just SO crazy and weird and stupid and boobs, it's bad fun.
Howling 3 - Even CRAZIER and that's basically it. But yeah...weremarsupials. It's crazy.
Silver Bullet - Cory Haim and Gary Busey AND a really good dream sequence and a few other cool things.
Underworld - I like the first one. Maybe it's just been too long since I've seen it, though, but I remember thinking it was a lot like the first Blade and enjoying it on that level.
Cursed - It's really stupid, but when the werewolf flips someone the bird, you're just like "Yeah, this is too stupid not to enjoy"
Howling Reborn - I actually don't remember this one much AT ALL aside from good wolf designs, but I'd watch it again if only for that.

Werewolf of London was the first werewolf movie in the sense that it set up the full moon mytho. Other than that there where several werewolf movies before it.
