Oh, it has nothing to do with Grand Theft Auto. Nothing to see here folks.

I'm gonna put in my will that when I die, I want to be given a People's Elbow from The Rock as one last desperation attempt to electrify my body and bring me back.
But this movie looks bad and it really disappoints me that he continues to be in such terrible movies. I think he's got a genuine charisma, and honestly, in today's day and age of skinny, fast action stars like Statham and Damon and Neeson and Bale...a walking Adonis like The Rock actually feels like a nice, nostalgic breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, he's in terrible movies.
And for that matter, so is Paul Giamatti. I've rarely if ever seen an actor who's so well-respected who's in SO MANY BAD MOVIES.

What is wrong with you guys? This movie looks like tons of fun! It looks like a standard summer popcorn disaster film. They're always rife with cheesy dialogue, bad acting, and enormous plot holes but they're fun! It's like Earthquake, or Volcano, or Twister. All terrible movies from a critical standpoint but I still had a good time watching each of them. Heck, I even enjoyed 2012 despite rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness of it all. THATS THE POINT! Big budget disaster movies are big cheesy fun and I can't understand why people who love Godzilla movies would be so quick to dismiss these. I mean, you can't possibly tell me that the city smashing fun isn't the primary draw of kaiju eiga. And what are disaster movies if not city smashing fun?!

Because these movies typically aren't FUN...they're overblown, over-dramatized, overserious, overLONG wastes of time.
I mean, even the trailer for this movie doesn't try to set itself up as fun...it's got this somber version of California Dreamin' (or was it California Here I Come? I'm not watching this trailer again). There aren't any fun lines of dialogue (or any real dialogue of note at all, honestly) spoken in the trailer...
Now, if this were a movie about The Rock poised to do battle with an earthquake and punch it into submission; THAT'S a level of stupid fun I can get with.

Giant monster films give you something to root for or against. Natural disaster films don't. You can't root for/against and earthquake or a volcano. It doesn't have a personality. So while both giant monster films and natural disaster films are cheesy and improbable I monster films give me something to follow outside the main characters.

Well, you make a valid point. And it's a major reason I find monster movies more enjoyable than disaster flicks. I suppose one could argue that you've usually got the main character(s) of a disaster movie to root for, though that's far less fun than giant monsters.
@jelly - yeah they play it straight and take themselves way to seriously (even Earthquake back in the 70's did that) but to me that's part of the ridiculousness that makes it entertaining. Usually...

Back from the dead! Seriously, though, saw this last night. I went in with low expectations(despite the good things I had heard)and was surprised at how much fun I had with this movie. One of the best disaster movies I've seen in quite a while. If any of you are contemplating seeing this, I would say go for it. The pacing and level of action were on par(to me, at least)with Mad Max Fury Road. I know I'll be getting this on Blu when it's released...

That's the first good thing I've heard. Gives me some hope, but I'll still wait for home video on this one most likely.

Since it's on Amazon Prime, I finally got around to watching this. In a word: bonkers. It took me a while to acclimatise to the tone, since the opening scene made me wonder if it was a parody. A busty airhead drives off the side of a mountain, hitting every twig and boulder on the way down in a bone-crunching tumble that would have killed Wile E Coyote, and comes out of it with barely a hair out of place. This is also the first of three scenes where The Rock decides that just piloting a helicopter/plane is boring, and it's much better to wander off/jump out of it while it's still in flight, much to the surprise of the busty journalist interviewing him. Later, Paul Giamatti teams up with the busty journalist to warn people about earthquakes, with the aid of his busty assistant and a bunch of surfer-dude students. When the shaking starts, The Rock must race to save his busty ex-wife and their busty daughter while everything collapses around them in a tightly choreographed fashion.
Seriously, I can't remember the last time a mainstream movie had such a high average bust size. It's like the casting director went around with a tape measure; even the extras are stacked. And when they're running and jumping and the ground is shaking, it's hard to pay any attention to the multi-million dollar disaster effects going on in the background. If Michael Bay and Russ Meyer had a love-child, he would have directed a loud, dumb, jiggly movie like this.

I am, of course, not complaining.

I like this movie's logic that Alexandra Daddario is so attractive that the only people capable of being her parents are Carla Gugino and The Rock.

I got this from Red Box when it came out. I was going to say "What else would you expect from Ronald Emmerich", since its his exact stupid-disaster formula, but I just looked at IMDB and found his name nowhere attached to this..., I was shocked! Well...someone has leaned to copy his style exactly, and that isn't good.
