Wowzers, that's alot of cash. To bad it did not earn any of it.

This movie was excellent. Fantastically crafted, atmospheric as hell and downright tense.

I loved it, but I don't know if its something I'd want to see on BD or DVD. This movie NEEDS to be seen in 3D on the largest screen possible, or else you're doing it wrong.

But yeah, another great film from Couron. Do yourself a favor and see it on the biggest screen you can find. Its an experience.

I hate 3-D movies but I feel this one is mandatory to see in 3-D. The spatial orientation actually adds to the atmosphere and feeling of the film rather than feel like a gimmick. I loved this movie science flaws and all.

3D mandatory? Pass.

Give it a chance. It is different from other 3-D films. It really does make this movie more immersive and gives you a feeling of helplessness and disorientation and I hate most 3-D movies and think most of them are gimmicks.

Totally agree. This wasn't a film, this was an epic experience. And, yes, you HAVE to see it in 3D. It is a required part of the experience, IMO. And I'm definitely not one to normally advocate for 3D at all. But seeing this film without 3D would be like watching Star Wars as a silent film.

And jelly, living in Space City now, you've got to see this and see it properly!

And, for what it's worth, the 3D in this blew me away. Better than any 3d I've ever seen. I don't know if it's because there was something different about it or just because it was used so well. If 3D was reserved for projects that really benefitted from it like this movie, and then done as well and effectively as it was here, then I'd absolutely change my tune and fully endorse it as a viable part of cinema.

As for the science, there were really only two things that jumped out at me as totally impossible, but they still didn't ruin it for me.

It is a fantastic movie. But you're really going to miss out if you pass up the chance to see it properly. The 3D is used incredibly well to add SO MUCH to the depth and sheer vastness of the distances in space, even low earth orbit.

I'd argue that you're approach, jelly, would be like skipping out on the chance to see a proper 70mm print of 2001 or Lawrence of Arabia and staying home to watch the bluray instead. Yes, they are still absolutely fantastic movies, but seeing them properly in the giant format adds so much to the experience that it is ABSOLUTELY worth going to the theater for. I never even saw avatar. But this, this is something altogether different. It is a great film made even greater by the intelligent use of available movie theater technology. And just like 2001 or LoA, it simply cannot be reproduced at home.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen in a theater. I'm so glad I went to see it in IMAX 3D. Jelly, I'm no fan of 3D either, but this movie is definitely a must-see 3D experience. The movie just wouldn't be so spatially engrossing without being seen that way. No other movie up until now had felt to me to be required 3D material. This was stunning. Go see it!!!

Just came back from this and this is the first film I thought was worth the 3D. Wonderful film, beautifully shot. No quick cuts, just a completely thrilling, engrossing film. The cinematography and a long takes that made Children of Men stand out are back and rather than the bleakness you have this vastness and terrifying beauty as a backdrop. It really is a beautiful film to watch. A++, would watch again.

Perfectly content seeing this in 2D. Great in 3D or not, I simply can't find it within myself to pay for a 3D movie. But I completely dug it. Very well paced and beautifully shot. I enjoyed the change of a survival movie where the character seems to have nothing to live for, but she finds a reason to get through the ordeal regardless. Well written stuff.

So, "No interest in seeing this on BD or DVD and you MUST see it in IMAX 3D"???

I call bull.

I saw this not in IMAX and thought it was beautifully shot, gorgeous to look at, and was also sucked into the events and felt the tension throughout.
As I said earlier in this thread, Avatar was also a 3D spectacle and it's ass as a movie, and if a movie is any good as a movie, it works without the 3D, which this did for the most part.

A couple of scientific implausibilities/impossibilities irked me and there was one specific part (not science related) that I think could have been handled better, but it's a taught, intense film that absolutely does not need 3D to work.

Well, I can't speak for others but I never said the film required 3D to be good. As you said, it's a good film on its own. But seeing it on a huge screen in 3D added so much to the experience that it was well worth the price and something I feel like you really missed out on if you skipped the chance.

I'll make essentially the same argument as before: I love Lawrence of Arabia. It's an incredible film with a great cast, terrific script, etc. etc. I've watched it numerous times on DVD and bluray and enjoyed it every time. Buy I finally got to see it in a movie theater on the big screen last year and it TOTALLY blows watching it at home out of the water. Nothing short of seeing it projected so huge does justice to the vastness of the desert or the exhilaration of the horseback charge on Aqaba. It added so much to the viewing experience.

The huge screen and 3D did the same in Gravity. It added so much to the sense of vast distance, depth, etc. and it made the viewing experience even better. Yes the film is still good at home on bluray, but you're missing out on something that made this film special - an experience that can't be had at home.

It was one of the best movies I saw last year and goes to show digital filmmaking depends on the people using it.
