I've read the same thing, William...I like that this author embraced that evidence and ran with it. I had no idea this book even existed, but I enjoyed MEG, so going to look into this. Did anyone read the MEG follow up, The Trench? Another one I need to read.
Wow! Just looked up this author and had no idea how many MEG books he's written...I need to get caught up.

Judging by that plot it sounds nothing Steve Alten's book and it just shares the title.
