Back when TechTV was still around The Screensavers would often mention ReplayTV as the DVR of choice. As I recall ReplayTV's boxes had all the inputs & outputs you could ask for (at the time) and offered the user much more control of the DVR than Tivo did -- I believe you could even export what you recorded directly to your computer.
It's a real shame that people settled for the limited usablity of Tivo style DVRs, that settling even killed the market for DVD recorders with built-in harddrives.

Commercials are the main reason I stopped bothering with cable tv. I will either just watch my shows streamed on Netflix or download them and then buy the BDs if the show is even worth rewatching (like Doctor Who).
When you have to deal with commercials with people doing nothing but screaming with subtitles to "translate" the screams, there is a problem.
