Well, Maleficent is coming out shortly. I probably won't see it for a while yet, but I really like the atmosphere the trailers present, and Maleficent is one of my favorite movie villains, so I'm looking forward to this.
Is anyone else feeling positive?

It looks as bland and joyless as Snow White and the Huntsman

That's my main issue with it. Why do we need to have every freaking villain these days have some sort of massive tragic backstory that are supposed to turn these characters sympathetic? Can't we just have a villain be evil because they just want to be down right evil?

If you have good writing, you can make a villain great regardless of their backstory. I hope this movie fails horribly otherwise we will end up seeing Jafar get a backstory movie. Nevertheless, we did not need to know why Maleficient was evil 40 years ago, we do not need to know now.

Caught this last night and mostly hated it. This is MINO lol Angelina does her best to keep this movie alive but I couldn't help but facepalm a lot of the time. I never really liked Sleeping Beauty but I always loved Maleifcent because she turned into a dragon as a kid.

So...this was awful. Its success is even more mind-boggling than its atrocious quality as a story. I mean $750 million? REALY?!?! The F***?!?!

Not since Alice in Wonderland have I been so utterly BAFFLED by a movie's success. I mean, yeah, just about every single year there are a few movies in the top 10 that I personally wouldn't spend a dime to see in theaters, but that doesn't mean their success is a complete mystery to me.
Imagine if Snow White and the Huntsman were a way worse film from a storytelling perspective. Imagine if that particular film, for its middle third just stopped in its tracks and did NOTHING that hadn't been already established in the first thirty minutes, much of which in itself was pointless. But also imagine it being more colorful, having a better sense of humor, and maybe slightly better acting. That's Maleficent. It fixes a couple of the problems of that Snow White movie but creates so VERY many more, it's astonishing.

Ultimately, you wind up with a film of roughly the same level of quality as Snow White and the Huntsman but somehow this time it made more than DOUBLE what the previous film managed to take. WHAT?!?!

^Familiar character/images with a legacy about it, big star, trusted brand. It's a movie made to be sold, and it did.
