Strange origins are really just not-very-important setup. I don't care why he becomes a sorcerer, I just want the Ditko-esque weirdness of spells, astral projection, magical dimensions, and bizarre villians.

I don't really want the Magic explained though...I want it to be Magic...that's part of what bums me out about the Thor movies is the WE JUST ALIEMS thing. It doesn't bother me that badly, but I hated that Malekith was getting around in a spaceship (a really cool looking spaceship and the notion of space elves is hilarious but still..).

I've only seen the Day the Earth Stood Still and Emily Rose.
Both weren't all that good or memorable.
We'll see how it turns out, but Jelly has it right, they probably just want someone they can puppet.
Which I kind of get, but it's crappy to lead a director on for so long only to pull the plug like they did with Ant-Man.

I think this is an interesting choice, especially since he's a horror guy. True, his filmography is spotty, but I loved Sinister and if his co-writer on that ends up on this, I'll be excited for sure.

Now can we start petitioning Hugh Dancy for the role of Dr Strange?

Good riddance. He's waaay too flaky and would've likely pulled an Edward Norton and either left in a huff or been canned after one go round. IMHO.

I've always thought Johnny Depp would make a good Strange, but he's so oversaturated anymore (and a LOT of what he's done recently has been tepid or downright crapola), so it would just come across as yet another eccentric oddball Depp performance.

I like the Ethan Hawke rumors and, as popular as it is to hate on him now, I still like the idea of Cumberbatch. Hopefully, they stick closer to the original origin than the "angst over the sister" shtick that I read about in the film's early stages. Doctor Strange is one of the few heroes I can think of who doesn't have any inner demons to overcome or an arch-villain who sets the hero's transformation in motion. Stephen just basically has to learn to think about others first and stop being a self-centered A-hole. The death of the Enlightened One also seemed to be a spurring moment and additionally, I recall that he was one of the first people Strange ever cared about other than himself, up until that point in his life.

I would have liked Mako as the Enlightened One but sadly that's no longer an option. I think Chow Yun Fat would be perfect in the role. Jackie Chan is sort out of movies now and he's too closely connected with comedy-ish roles. I know Joel Grey would do a terrific job since he was so amazingly awesome in Remo Williams, but the Chiun comparisons would be too obvious. Besides which, putting a white guy in oriental make-up would probably not go over very well with today's PC-obsessed Hollywood.

Lots of guys I liked for this role, but Cumberbatch will knock this role out of the park. Wonder if he'll be portrayed as a yank or a Brit??? It would be nice to see some non-USA heroes. I don't know how closely linked Strange is with America. Either way works for me. I've heard some people grumbling about "stupid magic" in a comic book world, but why the heck not? Besides, this is just basically a super Harry Potter, in a lot of ways, and people ate those films up. I'm certainly up for some bizarre Ditko/nightmare fuel images on screen. Ho yeah!!! Bring on Dormammu!
