MST3K Episode 204: Catalina Caper

Catalina Caper is the first of only a few outright comedies Best Brains used as MST fodder. Its been noted in cast interviews that it was difficult doing comedy over comedy, even though to be honest the comedy in Catalina Caper is pretty weak for the most part. The fact that the episode turned out so well is a testament to the Brains abilty.
The first time I saw this episode(probably 1991 or 1992) I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen. A few years later I watched it again and was really bummed by how poorly it held up to what I had remembered, so I wasn’t looking forward to watching it this week…but to my surprise I really enjoyed it last night. The movie itself is a fun 60s beach romp and the riffing is top notch pretty much from start to finish. Hell even the songs are catchy especially: At the party. The Nazi party
The first host segment, where Joel goes on about the 1960s is a classic. Segment 2 is where we finally begin to hear Tom Servos real voice as he serenades Creepy Girl. Some folks dislike segment 3, where Frank hosts the tupperware party, but I think its hilarious as well. Anytime Frank stammers nervously and gets very flustered is comedy gold to me.
