Interesting. I'd always wondered about that, and I don't recall it ever being explained on the special features included with any release of the first two movies.

Looks like Terminator's streak as the franchise of unfinished trilogies is set to continue. Between Alita and this, I guess Cameron's name doesn't carry the weight with audiences that it once did. That's hardly surprising, when you consider the startling fact that someone who is 20 years old in 2019 will have only seen one Cameron-directed movie released in their lifetime.

I haven't seen any of the Terminator movies since the fourth one and I wouldn't call myself a fan of the "franchise." I like the first film and the second one is pretty good, but beyond that...

Anyway, with the two latest films, I think they set themselves up for failure by highlighting the similarities to the first two Terminators (not coincidentally, the two most popular films in the series). The fifth (?) was advertised as almost a rehash of the first film while this latest one seemed to draw a lot from T2. Again, I haven't seen either movie so maybe the resulting films weren't at all like their previews, in which case, maybe I missed out (but I doubt it). But for me, I saw no reason to check these movies out when they seemed to be aping the earlier films.

And as with the latest Rambo, I'm not really interested in watching action stars from the '80s rehash their famous roles 30+ years later. That also seemed to be a big selling point in both recent Terminators.

You know, I'll probably always watch another Terminator. A movie featuring killer robots has to be pretty bad for me to gain no entertainment value from it. I even forgave T3 for its weaknesses and bought the blu-ray recently to complete my set. As for Dark Fate, I missed out on seeing it at the cinema due to it disappearing by the second weekend locally, and ended up doing a blind buy on the blu-ray. I don't regret the purchase because, again, killer robots. That said, it's hard to think of a reason why this particular story needed to be told. It's exactly what I feared: a shameless rehash of the original formula, just with a mix of new and old characters in the same old roles. Its one "twist", if you can even call it that, feels hopelessly anachronistic in execution:



All that moaning aside, it's an entertaining couple of hours, albeit an overly familiar one. I'm at least glad that it feels like a fairly self-contained story, and doesn't indulge in mid-credit shenanigans like Genisys, especially since its trilogy plans have surely been terminated.
