most of King's distaste for the movie probably has to do with The Shining being the first film based on one of his works that had all the budget and backing it needed to do whatever it wanted without removing things
he was probably thinking, "oh man, i wonder how Kubrick is gonna make the shrubbery scene look" or "how is he going to bring across the point that the hotel had a purpose and isn't just a haunted house?"
and then he was let down.
King is of the opinion that Kubrick "thinks too much and feels too little" or that, in other words, Kubrick is incapable of allowing himself to believe that something like a hotel could be alive and evil, and instead makes the story one of a man's decent into madness...i agree with that notion even though i don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. it just makes for a VERY different story.
he's since softened and said that while he recognizes Kubrick crafted a fantastic film, it is a poor adaptation of his novel (which i agree with)

i'm convinced that for every movie in existence, there exists a "Dr. Kain Kut", which only you own, and only you are able to see and hear...

No contest, Kubricks movie is in a whole other realm from the mini series.
Someone mentioned The Stand.. I've said for years that it would make for an awesome 12 part HBO series.
