The first time I watched Metropolis it was in one of those cheap movie packs. I had always wanted to see it, and it came packaged with "The Lost World" and "Things to Come", which were two other classics I was always curious about.
The cut of Metropolis I watched had horrid picture quality and I knew the music track wasn't quite right, but I was still enthralled. It was like walking through an art museum, and its amazing that something of this quality was made so long ago. So I eagerly picked up the Kino version which to my knowledge is the most complete version available until the new version hits stores. I adored the cleaned up picture and the soundtrack was perfect. Problem is that the movie was too long. The first version I watched was a much tighter movie. The restored scenes didn't really add all that much to the story that you couldn't already figure out on your own.
I'll still pick up the new "even more complete" release. This is a movie that really needs to be seen at least once so that you can see everything that its influenced since.
Btw, I do recommend seeing "Things to Come" and "The Lost World" if you have the opportunity. "The Lost World" is usually mentioned when people talk about what influenced King Kong. It's a silent movie like Metropolis. "Things to Come" is surprisingly grim at parts.
