Spielberg was the MAN up until the 90s. After the terrible Hook, he redeemed himself with Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. But ever since then, he's been the definition of hit and miss.
I'm actually one of the few that really like AI. And I don't think 1941 is as bad as people make it out to be. Where else can you get Dan Akroyd, John Belushi, Toshiro Mifune, Christopher Lee, Slim Pickens and John Candy in one movie?
Best: Jaws, Jurassic Park, Duel, Empire of the Sun, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Worst: Hook, War of the Worlds, The Lost World, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

That doesn't make any sense..."family friendly" ending? Are you talking about the disease killing the aliens ending or the family being re-united? If it's the disease thing then I'm confused because no matter which version of that story you watch/ read it's the same...
As far as the family being re-united it did seem like a little bit of a stretch but I was willing to go with it. Wasn't a big enough of an issue to sour my feelings towards the rest of the film.

i think saving private ryan is better at the end than the beginning, tbh...
Munich was a bland, by the numbers drama with nothing going for it other than being "emotional"...bleh
and War of the Worlds starts out GREAT, but when tim robbins rolls around, it becomes retarded...

Just to add to what I said about the "family friendly" happy ending of War of the Worlds... I think this kind of thing is really what drags Spielberg down for me at times. His obsession with kids in peril (and surviving in the dumbest ways possible)... its so annoying. Even in a film as amazing as Jurassic Park, he has to have two annoying child heroes (and lets face it the whole "little girl = life saving hero/computer hacker" thing is just plain BAD and even bothered me when I was a little kid).
When he started doing that is when he really started losing his edge... If THIS Spielberg made Jaws, Brody's kids would have been on the boat with him (via some dumbass reasoning like they were too precocious and stowed away with him)... and I guarantee we'd never have seen that poor kid at the beginning get chomped and spout a geyser of blood.... oh, and we'd see a CGI shark fill the screen at every given opportunity. Like James Cameron, he's just a guy that lost all his balls. And like Lucas, he's obsessed with using CGI even when there's no reason at all for it.
