King Kong lost footage - 1933

Postby Guardian7 » Thu Feb 04, 2010 4:41 am

I have read a lot about the lost footage for Kong's Log roll on the chasm.

Are there any surviving images of this and the supposed spiders that were suppose to come out? (I heard it was filmed but was too gruesome for the times).

Was there any other unused footage from the film other than the Chasm scene?

Since I am on the subject of Kong... in the Son of Kong was there any lost footage for that?

Just curious.
I would love to see some images of the spiders if any are available.

Thanks

Ben

Thank you so much for the image.
The spider looks great
I wish the scene had been kept in storage and re-added later on or at least been available as a deleted scenes option on the DVDs - as is the case with some movies.

Does anyone know of a source I can look into that gives lots of details about the Kong Movies (Specifically the 33 Kong and SoK)?
That way I won't have to pester anyone with probably already asked questions.

Thanks again Ben!

I bet many of you guys when you see that famous pic miss the giant snake on the right
Image

There are a few images from the scene. Such as this shot of another giant lizard eating a man that has only surfaced recently
Image

And this one featuring a giant spider going after the two guys on the log
Image

And the next shot where you can see the giant crab to the right

Here is a closeup of the crab whose lifting a sailor over his head

There were three full reels of footage cut from King Kong. The film was ciut from 14 reels to 11 reels after its preview screening in Janurary 1933. The book The Making of King Kong goes into detail about what was in the original test reel that was never put into the finished film.

The past three issues of FILMFAX has an in-depth ongoing article on the spider sequence.

You can also see two of the spider pit models in O'Bie's later film THE BLACK SCORPION. This is the spider segment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce8RTiXkqhc

I'm linking directly to a page with some nice clear pics of the models on their own.

People should check out Peter Jackson's fantastic stop motion re-creating of this scene.

I don't have that edition.
Looks like I am adding another one to my list.
Course in the case of that film I will bump it up to nearly the top.

Yeah I really do wish to own both Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young.

Though I think I want that KK double disc more.

So does anyone know if there was any lost footage from Son of Kong? Just curious... I haven't heard anyone speak of it yet so I thought I would put it out there again.

Thanks again for all your wonderful help guys!

If you have a Blu-Ray player Kong 33 is due out very soon for a release I thought it was going to be last year but I guess it got pushed back.

You may want to wait for that.

Wow, I had seriously never known about all that background on Son of Kong. It's a terrible shame the original plans never came to pass, but even so, I still enjoy the movie we got. It certainly doesn't give the first film a run for its money, and it seems to take forever to get rolling, but I still find it a fun little piece of entertainment overall.

One problem is that there were no interviews with O'brien and how he did his magic.
