Torchwood: Children of Earth (Series 3) is a 5-part miniseries beginning next week in the States (DVD and BR available end of month). Starts Monday on BBC America July 20th, 9 - 10:15pm, then each following weeknight next week.

Aired in the UK last week, so no spoilers here until it's over please.

I have seen it and it was excellent*. I've not been a huge fan of the show, some highs, some lows, mostly watch it out of obligation to DW. But Torchwood has never been so good as it was in COE. Really edge-of-your seat (no, really, I could barely relax in the first 2 1/2 hours), fantastic super-creepy Quatermass-like nemesis, one of the best performances I've seen on TV (Frobisher, Peter Capaldi who played Caecilius in the Doctor Who episode "The Fires of Pompeii"), and more than a few references to DW (plus a hint of what's to come). Highly, highly recommended, even if (like me) you didn't think much of Series 1 or 2.

* with conditions, but I don't want to say anything yet

Torchwood has not been on SyFy, only BBC America and (now) BBCA HD. I believe both are carried on most of Comcast, but I think the channel lineup varies from region to region. I think I've read Torchwood is also available On Demand.

Kain, the COE DVD comes out at the end of the month, so there's no huge rush. Actually, Torchwood is pretty accessible whether or not you've seen all of the new DW. And this mini is actually just as good a place to start as any because it's not very dependent on the past two seasons...

...except for one story element that probably won't make any sense until you finish Doctor Who Series One and/or the first episode of TW. I don't want to spoil anything on the former until you've seen it.

Other than that, the premise of Torchwood is pretty straightforward:

Torchwood: outside the government, beyond the police. Tracking down alien life on Earth, arming the human race against the future. The 21st Century is when everything changes -- and Torchwood is ready.

Watching it on BBCA now. Pretty darn good, especially for (or despite) having RTD involved.
This so far is an abnormally good Earth under siege story. As I was telling Bob J, it reminds me of the opening half of Dawn of the Dead in the "Holy crap what's happening to our planet" way.
