Ray Harryhausen Presents: War Eagles (2010)

Postby MouthForWar » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:27 am

Yes, yet another thing for giant monster fans to look forward to.

War Eagles, a Willis O'Brien/Merrian C. Cooper project that was scrapped back in the day is currently being made into a movie, produced by Ray Harryhausen and under a new "Ray Harryhausen Presents" banner, which will have more films under its belt in the future. This isn't the first time Ray resurrected a lost Obie project... Valley of Gwangi was a Willis O'Brien concept that never got made until Ray resurrected it after his death.

War Eagles is a WWII fantasy with giant birds. The novelization is being done by Angel Gate press (www.angelgatepress.com has some more info).

Here's the cover:

Yeah, I really have no idea what this is gonna be like. Hopefully more than a glorified Sci-Fi Original. The Ray Harryhausen Presents banner was already on the Chiodo Bros. Trail of the Screaming Forehead, which I heard was awesome, so hopefully this will at least be on par with that production.

Within the conversation there wasn't more than that, just that it's most likely not going to be made into a movie. I know Conover was pushing for it at one time and maybe still is. He made his own promotional trailer to sell the project that made the convention rounds a couple of years ago.

But since it has wound up at this no name, few resource company, I'm guessing the novel and Conover's biographic book are probably going to be it.

I agree David, Kunart is probably not doing Ray's name a favor by selling it to a lot of almost fanzine level media projects. The Chiodo Bros project could be neat, but the rest of it seems pretty sketchy.

The colorizing, as long as the DVDs are sold with really nice original B&W prints, doesn't bother me. I got SHE a couple of weeks ago and though it's still very pastel looking, the colorizing is a vast improvement over the Turner stuff. There's actually grades to the colors on a surface, so it isn't flattened out. Even if it looks perfect though, it's more likely I'd watch the original anyway. But at least the effect looks good.

I agree the Conover book that Angel Gate is putting out about the history of War Eagles sounds good... I'll probably skip the novelization also, though.

Are the comics really THAT bad?
