MST3K Returns!

Okay, most people know that Mike Nelson, with the help of Bill Corbett (Crow v.2) and Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo v.2) have been doing downloadable humourous movie commentaries under the Rifftrax banner at

And they have also done The Film Crew. DVDs where they riff on old B-movies and put on little skits (like MST3K, but without the puppets). All of the four Film Crew DVDs are available at your local retailers so go out and get them now because they're just plain awesome.

...but that's only 3 people. What are the other MST3K guys doing?

Well, it's funny you should ask, because Joel Hodgson has decided to get back into the race. With the help of Trace (Crow v.1), Frank (TV's Frank), Mary Jo (Pearl) and Josh (Tom Servo v.1) he's started Cinematic Titanic. They've secured the rights to 12 B-movies to be riffed on, with silhouettes (on the sides of the screen on rafters insetead of at the bottom in seats). You'll be able to download episodes of this new series off the website

...hmmm, they'll be doing a live show for the folks at ILM and Lucasfilm? Must be some MST3K fans there!


Well that's pretty big news and I don't expect that there would be any more, BUT WAIT!

Jim Mallon (Producer, voice of Gypsy) will be staring an official MST3K website with "material from the original series" (downloadable episodes?), as well as behind the scenes info, other material from the MST vault, and a new online store.

Plus, Mallon and Paul Chapman (MST3K writer) will be making a brand new web-toon series featuring Gypsy, Crow, and Tom Servo to go on the website. Paul will be doing the voice of Crow and Mallon will reprise the role of Gypsy, no word yet on Tom.

I picked up volume 12 yesterday, I just wish the volumes were more affordable priced....you can get the entire 24 episodes of Heroes season one for the same price as 4 episodes of MST3k

You know, I think it's really sad all of these guys have gone their separate ways but are such one trick ponies that they're pretty much all doing variations of MST3K in some form. And here I thought that Joel didn't want to be thought of as only making fun of bad movies his entire career. And what's he doing now? Yeah, putting the seats on the side of the screen really separates this from MST3K, Joel.

For me the closest to MST3K would have to be the Film Crew DVDs, since it's incredibly easy to pretend that it's really Mike, Crow and Servo doing the commentaries, just without the silhouettes.

What I wouldn't give to see everyone just get together again and restart this franchise, on DVD at the very least. Too bad Jim Mallon is such a jackass.

^Yeah, but there was no maliciousness involved. They always at least thought they had the right to the movies. The only time they knew they didn't was during Season 0 when they were on a local station, and it turned out that the station didn't even have the right to those movies which was one of the reasons it folded right around the time MST3K left!

the only reason Rhino is unable to release complete box sets of each season is because the rights to many of the movies have lapsed and are expensive to re-buy.

Do you really think the studio that owns "Teenagers from space" really is upset because it got riffed on by a low budget comedy show? Its all about the money and it would simply cost to much to get the rights back to the movies that have lapsed....

....BTW, I've watched the first Cinematic Titanic episode The Oozing Skull and it is wonderful. I mean, I really liked the Film Crew DVDs and I've never really gotten in to Rifftrax (too much work to rent these films, synch up the audio, ect., but the Youtube clips have always been good for a laugh)... but this really recaptures the magic of MST3K. Not suprising, since the show had a full staff of these writers and no matter how funny Mike, Bill, and Kevin are they're still just three.
