Despite the Rankin-Bass animated version being a compressed version of The Hobbit - I've always enjoyed it. There's some impressive visual sequences too, such as when Gandalf saves them from the Orcs and when Frodo saves the Dwarves from the Spiders. And we should remember that even Jackson's LOTR compressed and/or elimnated parts of the FOTR, TTT, and ROTK.
The primary way a live action movie could do better is to take advantage of a longer run time to tell more of the story.
It'd be great if Jackson could direct it, that way a live action version of The Hobbit maintains a consistant 'vision' with LOTR. Hopefully the situation can be amicably resolved so that The Hobbit can get made.
