from Arrow in the Head:

[quote] Well, if this is indeed something that is happening - then you might as well buy me a ticket and a new pair of boxer shorts, because I'm already sold on this bizarre new epic.

According to AintItCoolNews, J.J. Abrams, co-creator of ALIAS and LOST, is working on some kind of BLAIR WITCH meets GODZILLA mash-up called CLOVERFIELD (hate the title, but don’t understand it yet either).

Here’s what Moriarty over there at AICN has to say regarding this wild sounding project: “...what makes this different than any other giant monster movie? Well, as I understand it, most of the film is going to be shot using home video cameras, as if from the point of view of real people who are experiencing an attack on New York. It’s designed as a fairly small picture, all things considered, and right now, they’re working to make sure the script is going to deliver some wild thrills (like an earthquake that levels Manhattan or an oil tanker flipping over by the Statue of Liberty), but that it’s not suddenly going to turn into a giant $150 million movie. It’s a tricky balance, and if they pull off everything they’re trying to do, CLOVERFIELD could be something really groovy. Not a man in suit in sight.â€

Wild! I'd heard the title "Cloverfield" over on trekmovie.com, but I think everyone was expecting that it was either a codename for the new Trek film or Stephen King's "The Dark Tower".

Here's a description of the teaser that's coming soon to theaters, some say attached to TRANSFORMERS. The word CLOVERFIELD is never mentioned or shown. I suspect it's just a code title, because this whole project has been about secrecy:

[quote]On shaky video cam footage, we see a group of young New Yorkers throwing a party for a friend who is moving. No music, no voice-over intoning “In a world…â€

I can't imagine in any way that it will turn out to actually be a secret Godzilla film. But what I could see is that if it is a giant monster film with a unique approach, and it becomes wildly successful, perhaps Toho will be inspired to take a fresh look at their franchise. It all depends on how much the film costs, how much it makes, and whether or not it plays well in Japan. Godzilla is a business, and if Toho sees an opportunity...

Do you think it could be that Trey Parker/Matt Stone movie about kaiju?

If not I'm sure it'll be sweet but didn't Japan have a movie similar to this?
