Kirk was 30 or 31 when he got command of the Enterprise, and the rest of the crew was already in place, except for McCoy.

this is not a good idea- it'll be too serious or to "funny" if Damon tries to sound like Shatner, which he will be compared to, fairly or unfairly

Well Robert with Abrams it very well could be...STINO(good one!) You should have seen his interviews about Superman when he was doing the script-absolutely NO respect for source material and very high on himself. And as far as Trek goes they really tried to milk the collective goodwill for the original along with the trendy "prequel" gimmick with enterprise. But yes you're right Galactica and especially Who were successful revivals, although I'd argue Who is ongoing as opposed to a prequel thing. What I can say for sure about myself is-I grew up on Star Trek, LOVED the original cast and movies(give me Kirk humpin a green chick over baldy picard anyday) moderately like next gen. However as Bragga and co continued to milk the series I lost interest. By the time voyager came around I was kinda "yawn". So as a formerly loyal trekkie it would take a tremendously good SCRIPT and idea as opposed to trendy casting to get me back. However I was skeptical of Who initially also and it has proven me totally wrong.

One can not simply just recast Kirk. There are characters who can be played by different people, (James Bond, Jack Ryan) and still be the same character. But there are some characters that only have one actor able to make them who they are. A big part of Kirk is the fact that he's played by Shatner. You have somebody else play Kirk it'll either come off as a parody or just not Kirk. What would you think if they had some one else play Iniana Jones in the next film? You can't have Dr. Jones without Harrison and you can't have Kirk, or any other original Trek cast, be played by anyone else.

Any why go back in time? Why not do something with people we never heard about durring the gap between the original series and next gen. Why not do a film about a war with current enemy? There are some many possibilites for stories one could tell without going with a prequel.

Are they finally doing this? I remember reading that they had originally planned to make a prequel like this a long time ago... in place of IV, I think.

Can't remember though... :?

it could work as a flashback movie, though- have the surviving originals sitting around (or something) talking about how they got out of some jam, and then show the younger people. that might be interesting.

Why not have Robert April or Pike be captain? No development, only fanboy theories, plenty of room for writing...its simple and would work, but then again life is a "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" and too complicatecd for me

^^he can look as Shatner, but do we really need another remake-reimagining-whatever (specially a Star Trek one)? A lot of big budget movie projects are just sequels, prequels and remakes. No wonder why the box office income is lower than a few years ago.
