Great sci-fi classics from the 1950's: The Day The Earth Stood Still(1951), When Worlds Collide(1951), The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms(1953), Twenty Million Miles To Earth(1957), Forbidden Planet(1956), The Crawling Eye(1958), It Came From Beneath The Sea(1955), The Abominable Snowman(1957), Journey To The Center Of The Earth(1959), The Fly(1958)(the sequel is not as good), Invasion Of The Body Snatchers(1956),The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad(1958) Note: though not a 50's film this sci-fi/horror is IMO pretty good: Planet Of The Vampires(1965) Most have trailers

Off hand, I can think of a few you might be interested in...

Fiend Without a Face - great flick with some tense, eerie scenes. Quite gory for its' time too. While you might think invisible monsters are a bit of a cop-out, once they do make an appearance they're quite cool-looking and unique. This one's a Criterion release, so the extras are top-knotch. It has a commentary, a featurette and some trailers.
Angry Red Planet - fun flick with some cool effects and monsters. There's a trailer on that one.
Invaders from Mars -Great film, very similar to 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. It has a wondefully eerie soundtrack and dreamlike visuals. The dvd has two versions of the film - the US cut, and the British version with an alternate ending.
Target Earth - you might not consider this a good flick, but I quite like it. A woman wakes up to find everyone else in her city has been killed by invading Venusian robots. Fun little flick. The dvd has a commentary by the film's producer, and a trailer.
Quatermass 2 - Very cool flick with some nifty Hedorah-like monsters. If ya liked 'Quatermass and the Pit' you should check out that one.
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers - you've probably already seen this one. It's a Harryhausen flick, so it's a must-have.
First Men in the Moon - another Harryhausen film, and a good one.
The Time Machine - Another favourite of mine. You might've seen this one too. It's way better than the remake, IMO. The dvd has a trailer and two featurettes.

Mebbe you should get some Hammer dvds, the early ones are the best.

Curse of Frankenstein

Horror of Dracula
The Mummy
Dracula, Prince of Darkness

are pretty good.

And while it's not my favorite, Frankenstein must be destroyed is alright.

Another sci-fi classic, I consider the original film head and shoulders above Carpenter's attempt at a remake.


Before ordering individual movies that Harryhausen did effects work on. [many of the movies already listed] Take a look at the following...

You're best bet for getting a good deal on Harryhausen films is probably ordering the 2 collections that came out last year. [Unfortunately they aren't listed on the TLAvideo site, but it's worth your while to see if you can order them anyways. Here's Amazon's product pages so you know what to ask for]

The only Harryhausen boxed set TLA Video does list is the one Sony put out in November/December. Sony repackaged 20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers, and It Came From Beneath the Sea with what they call a 'scrapbook' [just some excerpts from Harryhausen's book An Animated Life] and are selling it for the price of either of the two 5 movie boxed sets I listed above.

All these suggestions are GREAT and I would certainly look into getting them all to add to your collection, but if you ever do decided to go kinda the B movie route there's a DVD company that puts out collections that each consist of 50 movies on about 12 DVDs or so and 3 of the collections feature a lot of "B" horror and sci-fi movies from not only the '50s but also the '30s, '40s, '60s, '70s and even some from the '80s. Each set is only about $20 so don't expect the best quality prints of the movies or anything, but it's a very inexpensive way to build a classic "B" movie library and my 3 sets should be arriving within the next week or so.
