I'm going in expecting tons of genre cliches and tropes and mainstays, but I'm also expecting that such is the POINT of the film, in the hopes that maybe, just MAYBE if people see this, it will get them to check out the films that we (and presumably GDT) have known and loved for DECADES. (ie, "Hey man, this Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla stuff is awesome; it's a lot like Pacific Rim!").

GDT knows (as should everyone here) that 90% (or more) of current movie goers are almost wholly unfamiliar with the traditional kaiju film. It's almost tear-inducing how often I've heard people think GINO is the most recent Godzilla film, or think it's the only Godzilla film.

I just think there's a way to honor the past, while still keeping things fresh and exciting.

We won't know until we see the film if the stock characters feel like an homage to the past, or lazy script writing. Time will tell.

But isn't that what del Toro has been doing n all his movies, working with archetypical characters, but just telling their stories really well with great actors?

Hell, he already used the "Prince with daddy issues tries to overthrow his father" cliche character TWICE.... AND WITH THE SAME ACTOR.

And speaking of Hellboy II, it has one of the most predictable endings in a superhero movie in the last decade... but ya know what, I liked that ending anyway.

Guillermo del Toro is a traditionalist to the extreme. I've always said that about him. His films are almost wall to wall cliches, its just that he thinks them out fully and brings them to life with fantastic performances and a unique visual style. I'm as huge a GDT fan as any, but telling original stories was never part of his MO.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with stock if it's done really well. That's, you know, Star Wars.

Yeah, Cloverfield was decent enough for me. I'm not too much a fan of the hand held camera stuff, but I found that using a Giant Monster for a film like that is actually pretty good. There's JUST enough monster action to like for me. It's been 4 years since that movie, so I'm glad America is getting into more Giant Monster films with Pacific Rim and Godzilla.

EDIT: ANY chance at all that Paramount would go the route of co-producing a Cloverfield 2 with Legendary? Wonder if anyones thought of that before.
