In the early 90s I that reminds me a bit of PacRim's basic plot. In the GoMan story an asteroid crashes into Earth which spreads crystals over the world that turn out to be cocooned monsters. They are growing and projected to hatch in 2147. The crystals are impenetrable so the Earth forces build giant robots to fight them as they hatch. 5 highly trained combat specialists are brought in to drive the mechs.
This unfortunately had a highly limited release in the US but was fairly popular in Japan.

Comment to McCoy saying people are snobs when it comes to movies. I find a large majority of critics are snobs and don't review of a movie if it is entertaining. They review it to see if it fits in parameters they have set for movies in general and become close minded. I even find joy out of watching bad movies. Hell, I own Death Wish 3 on DVD because of how hysterical the movie is. I acknowledge it is hack but I still don't mind watching it.

I stopped going to RottenTomatoes a long time ago. Of course there are instances of a film critic giving a really good movie a bad review or a really bad movie a raving review just to get noticed. You can tell when it happens.

You might stab me for saying this but Ebert is the only critic I read because his reviews are insightful, knowledgeable and even funny. (there are reviews of his that he misses the mark completely like Gojira, Kick-Ass)
But he is genuinely honest and doesn't bullshit his readers. He is also very outspoken about film violence inspiring school shooters and how that theory is complete crap. However he disliked Kick-Ass because of a 12 year old knife wielding girl could inspire other girls her age to do the same thing. That was hypocritical on his part. :)

Sorry, that was a rant and a half. I felt it was relevant to the fact people are snobbing up to Pacific Rim without giving Del Toro the benefit of the doubt.

I get where you're coming from, Jelly, but to me that wasn't a critical opinion. To me, that was some piece of sh*t self-proclaimed film expert telling everybody excited about this movie to go f*ck themselves. I would have been fine with "This doesn't look any more amazing than what we've gotten over the last few years," or something like that. But the "pantswetters" comment just nullified that person's professional opinion for me.

And he's stating all his previous views as fact, which is even more bullsh*t. I know fanboys can be annoying, but that's not how you go about dealing with them. I'd like to think that I would have a little more respect for an opposing opinion than to outright insult them about it.
