My reactions to all the recent Universal Monsters news:

"There will be an attempt by Universal to revitalize all the monsters and bring you new Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf-Man, Mummy and Gillman movies over the next few years..."

I'M IN!!!!

"...The artistic vision for these movies will be overseen by Kurtzman and the vibe will be action-oriented with the goal of turning the monsters into an Avengers-style team of misanthropes and unlikely heroes."

I mean, I get the Avengers thing, but just say House of...
It shouldn't be about monster superheroes so much as just seeing them meet.
The only "heroes" I could see is the Wolf-Man (who is pretty much the Hulk as far as his portrayal in the classic films), Victor Frankenstein (If he survives their adaptation), Van Helsing...
Whatever they do, when they meet up, Dracula better not get ripped off like he did in House of Frankenstein and Dracula. He gets killed so quickly in those films and forgotten. Which is weird to see happen in House of Dracula.

I like the idea of a modern day Universal monster series but this is not the way to do it.

I'm gonna wait to see how this plays out. We're looking way too far into the future.

I was thinking the other day about how I would do a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake.

One thing I really hit on, was that the cliched concept of a monster falling in love for a human woman is old hat and needs to die a quick death if it hasn't already. I can envision a modern Creature film being much more of a Jane Goodall situation where the human woman scientist is actually the one trying to protect the Gillman from poachers, hunters or nefarious scientists. Not that the Gillman needs protection mind you, but I think it'd be an interesting flip on a silly concept.

I kind of like the idea of updating the whole "arrogance of man" and "things yet to be discovered angle" from the original. We live in an age of satellites and global imagery, but what lurks inside the caves and murky waters that have remained untouched by man?
You could take an angle like "The Descent" where unarmed explorers are being picked off by something not quite animal and not quite human..you could even take a page from Tolkien and have the creature follow unarmed explorers that had removed something "precious" to the creature from its lair. In that angle I would try to have at as a simple, innocent creature that did not know its own strength and killed only by accident...
I would want whatever angle to still portray the gillman as a monster capable of monstrous things rather than a noble creature trying to be free

Not that I feel it's outdated, but I do think people often approach 'men acting as god' stories incorrectly or too simply. For example, bad things don't happen to Frankenstein because he creates a monster, but because he creates a being, neglects it and sees it as a monster. It's not that acting as god leads to disaster, it's acting as god poorly.
