Everything about the third movie was in direct opposition to what the first film was about.
Suddenly Omnicorp is bought by a Japanese company, so it's no longer a satire about evil capitalists/politicians getting away with anything they want. No, now the Japanese are to blame. It takes all the wrongdoing off of what was originally portrayed as an evil company and makes them look like bumbling fools partnered with a competent villain.
And the little girl did more than amp the kitty-level of the franchise it added a sweetness to a world void of that kind of thing. In the first movie she would've been stepped on by ED-209, but in Robocop 3 she effectively reprograms it while it stands idle, counting down. It's the kind of cutesy humor that clashes with the first two movies' comedic beats. The reactions to ED-209 killing a suit in the office during the first act of Robocop, that was kind of funny. Not feel-good-funny, but dark funny. And that's RoboCop. That's a major element that makes the movie. RoboCop driving... whatever it was he was driving late in the third movie... not funny. Cringe worthy.
And finally, no Peter Weller. It wouldn't have been as bad if the movie were actually good, but Burke just doesn't do the movie any favors. Although I can understand why Weller wanted to get far away from this thing...
The music is the only thing the third movie has going for it.
RoboCop 2 might be a mess, but at least it stayed closer to the established world of the first movie and made for an entertaining return for the character. Entertaining is not what I'd call the third one. Maybe... unwatchable?
