Bryan Cranston is the lead in one of the most popular and most acclaimed shows of the last decade and has a massive following. Between Godzilla and Pacific Rim, he's really the only actor with any real marquee value. No, he's not a Tom Cruise-type A-lister, but he's ridiculously popular. People love his characters and they love to watch him in interviews. He was HUGE at Comic-Con this year. Google "Bryan Cranston memes" and see what happens.

I liked a lot about this movie, and one of the things I liked about it was that while I was watching the movie, I felt like I was seeing some plot holes and/or plot threads that were just getting dropped, and then they kinda addressed those things throughout and later on and stuff to where I went "Ah, well, they didn't forget about this thing, they just didn't want to waste screen time by showing him taking a pill every few hours".

The parole robot was fantastic and I wanted more of that kind of thing. The whole idea that no matter what you do, you can't get ahead because this system gives you no-win scenario after no-win scenario.

Sharlto Copley was great, I just wish they had mentioned what all the metal all over his body was. I gathered it was for a suit to anchor onto, but then why was it on his face too?

The only thing about the movie I really didn't like was Jodie Foster. Her speech pattern and accent felt so FORCED an unnatural and I just did not like her here at all.

I hope Blomkamp keeps making films.

My review of "Elysium"

Postby Destroysall » Fri Nov 22, 2013 8:09 pm

So I guess I have yet to post a review of the film apparently.

Blomkamp really did a marvelous job with District 9, and I must say, Elysium was no joke either. His movies really push for a quality that is more eclectic than just entertaining. If there is a word I can use to describe his work, it is very interdisciplinary. I feel a good comparison can be Gareth Edwards. Both their films have a multitude of layers that express more than what literally just "meets the eye." In Elysium, the subliminal message is still apparent like his previous film, but it is much more bonded with its entertainment-based camouflage. If I had to nominate a highlight of the film, I'd definitely pick Sharlto Copley. The guy knows how to act, and he often performs well beyond what he is tasked to do.

So to do a quick evaluation for time's sake, I'd rate the film a nice 3.8/5 stars.

Feel free to start a new thread. Absolutely NO reason to bump an Elysium thread with discussion of a different movie.

i do like it, some aspects i love. It's just i think the last third of the movie doesn't capitalize on the potential of the first half of the film, which District 9 did phenomenally well.

Overall it's still a good original scifi film, so i probably shouldn't be so hard on it. i would like to see more movies in the same vein.
