The purge of old b&w episodes wasn't malicious, it's just that there were union rules preventing too many repeats, and no one foresaw the home video revolution coming until 1978. So they either reused or trashed old videotapes for all of their shows. Fortunately, some escaped and many were transferred to and preserved as film for overseas sales. There were a few Pertwee episodes that were missing as well, but they managed to recover them all, even if it was an NTSC copy or B&W copies made for primarily B&W markets. Fortunately the Restoration Team has gotten extremely good at taking even those and making them look as good as the originals. During the 80s and 90s the BBC and DW fans turned up the heat looking for those lost episodes, and things were being found in the strangest places for quite awhile. It's trickled off now, but there's always hope. Hope that that last episode of The Tenth Planet will show up in someone's attic or a boot sale!!

Revenge of the Cybermen and Silver Nemesis aren't out on DVD yet.

Now you know why I'm glad you happened to watch Survival. At least you knew about the Master first!

Time Lords can't generally choose, but the Master seems to be a special case. He's practically a Time Lord in spirit only, having stolen so many bodies over the years (after using up all his regenerations -- off screen apparently -- around the Tom Baker era). Whether or not his ability comes from something endowed upon him by the Time Lords or something else isn't spelled out. Suffice to say, he's hard to kill.

Yeah, it seems like everytime they re-release The Five Doctors, someone tries to take a new stab at the Time Scop effect. I seem to remember that a few extra or extended scenes were added as well. The Master talking to the Third Doctor was longer, and maybe a longer scene with the Brig and the Second Doctor. I think they changed Rassilon's voice, too.

Hard to remember, I probably haven't watch the original version since the late 80s. Looking back, it's hard to believe that there were only 4 or 5 stories on VHS for years ... Revenge of the Cybermen, Pyramids of Mars, a heavily edited Deadly Assassin (or was it Brain of Morbius?), Robots of Death, and after a few years, The Five Doctors. Then, more drought. I don't even think they were sellthrough price at first. But I was lucky. We had a PBS station that was still showing it through the 80s and early 90s (and Blake's 7!) and I had friends in the UK sending me tapes throughout the 80s for my PAL converter'd VCR.

I'm so glad to have all those VHS gone. Well, almost gone. Not until Kinda and Snakedance are released!

"Doctor Who Magazine confirms the title of David Tennant's swan song as The End of Time. The final episode will be 75 minutes long, with the penultimate episode running in at 60 minutes duration. Timothy Dalton will play The Narrator in the final episodes."

I wouldn't be surprised if The Narrator turns out to be something like The Doctor or The Master.

I have a subscription (pricey, ouch) to DWM, but it's always at Borders here in the Bay Area and I saw it there last time I was in Ohio.

I don't think dates have been announced, but based on the past and this year's calendar, I'm going to guess Sat Dec 26 and Sun 27.
