My one sentence review of Batman v Superman. Mess by Committee.
First off, I did actually like the movie. Not as much as I would have liked but I did not think it was as horrid as rabid internet does. Although it is a mess.
It really feels like WB/DC REEEEAAAAALLLLLY wanted to have a Justice League movie out as soon as freaking possible. Like two years ago. But instead of giving us a good movie to move towards that goal they shoved a Batman movie, Man of Steel 2, and adapted the tie-in prequel comic to the Justice League movie into a single film. Too much, too fast, too soon.
Any thing with Batfleck and Alfred was great. I thought that Eisenberg was actually a great Lex. A very different kind of Lex. A full on crazy Lex. I can deal with that. I like that. Gal was a great Wonder Woman for as a short time as we see her.
But like I said there's like two and a half movies in this thing. A non-origin solo Batfleck movie would have been nice, as from interviews and other ancillary things I know that Alfred is less of a butler and more of a very close and personal friend of the family who makes all the bat-gadgets. Which I really would have loved to see explained and whatnot. And it'd be good to have a better sense of how long Batman has been Batman-ing and what not. Like is there a Robin out there? A Nightwing? Batgirl perhaps? And why the hell is Batman
Lex's whole scheme to But the story line was done in such away the I don't think some of the audience was able to follow it in full.
And then there's the Justice League set up. that is obviously setting up the JL movie. Add to that there was I honestly don't know, that was just damn confusing and did NOT mean anything with in the movie itself. I know WB/DC wants to get a JL movie but let it flow naturally and don't make a movie just a stepping stone to that because you're too damn impatient to do a few solo movies before getting the gang together.
And who is to blame for all of this? Well was it Sam Raimi's fault Spider-man 3 was stuffed with enough villains and plots for two movies? Was it Marc Webb's fault Amazing Spider-man 2 felt like it was more interested expanding the Spider-Verse than being a good movie? That's why I don't fully blame Zack Snyder for this mess. This mess was created by executives who are trying to play catch up to Marvel with little regard to anything else.
Mess by Committee.
