Roberto Orci, the man who co-wrote the first two Star Trek films in J.J. Abrams' alternate universe, left a comment at trekmovie.com to clarify he is NOT writing the script for Justin Lin's Star Trek 3: Tokyo Drift.

Oh god, why can't they just wait until Abrams is done with Ep VII? They had no problem waiting for him between the last two movies, why rush it now? So much for having three great Star Trek movies in a row.

That's a DICK comment, but at the same time, I think the alternate timeline idea is by far the best decision they made when rebooting Star Trek.

BUT...

...do people complain about the fact they went with an alternate timeline? I feel like most, if not all the complaints down that avenue go something like, "Going with a new timeline is a cool idea, but if you're gonna do it, then COMMIT to it instead of just re-making Wrath of Khan but calling it by a different name"

With the first movie JJ, Orci, & Kurtzman were publicly committed about not going the alternate universe/reboot route until they finally had to fess up. If Paramount et al. had been upfront about rebooting Star Trek I think Nu-Trek's reception would have gone over better.

Of course, that still leaves Nu Trek's fundamental flaw, the Romulan Empire's core sun going supernova. The Nero gets thrown back over a century in the past and instead of making a bee line for Romulus & Remus to inform the Romulan Empire what's up, he goes on a revenge quest against the Federation, and more specifically Spock because his family died when the RE's core planets were destroyed.

And of course, the Nu-Trek universe also requires that Federation, Romulan, Klingon, etc. astrophysicists are utterly incapable of detecting that a star is destabilizing and going to go supernova until pretty much the last moment. Further the Romulan Empire seemingly could not even effect an evacuation of the populations of Romulus and Remus -- this is Star Trek, we know that at least the Federation would have been sending all sorts of ships to help with an evacuation.

I want something like a a giant amoeba or the doomsday machine...just a big weird thing in space that everyone is trying to figure out.

I got wayy too hyped for Into Darkness because I thought it was going to, based on the title and nothing else, be about them venturing into deep space. The Enterprise on its lonesome encountering something new.

The last time we got a movie about the Enterprise on its lonesome encountering some big thing they were trying to figure out we got Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Maybe I'm cynical, but I just don't think that type of storyline works in the films. They make great episodes, but I'm not interested in watching a two hour episode.

But I do want the Enterprise to be out in deep space without any back-up or anywhere close by to run for help. I loved the situations in Star Trek II and VI where they where too damaged to run / call for help or avoided contact with Starfleet to solve the issue themselves, respectively.

I would like to see some type of follow up to one of the original episodes, similar to what was done with the Wrath of Khan. I have my favorites but it really doesn't matter which one as long as the story is good.

How about something that hasn't been tackled in a previous movie or fan-favorite episode?
