I honestly believe Banno's film won't do much except be a small blip on the hollywood radar, similar to Godzilla 2000 before it....unless it's aimed at kids, who'll believe it's Spy Kids 4 in 3D......
1-18-08 has, if it's that way, a sort of flair that appeals to a mass audience. I'll admit, saying this one will "bring back kaiju to the mainstream" is a rather long stretch - if anything, it'll get more kaiju-like movies running on Sci-Fi channel. I believe this'll be like a fad, kinda like Transformers - it was fun at the movies, but once you watch it again and simmer a few hours, you realize what a pointless movie it was and forget about it.
Personally, I don't give a damn if Abrams is attached - I dislike both Alias and Lost, and M:I3 sucked ass. However, the fact that he has the balls to step up and make a giant monster movie in the US, where audiences are all about how realistic something should be, lends him some credibility in my eyes. I'm psyched about this movie because it's a different take on the genre, all the while(hopefully) paying tribute to the film that started it.
To make matters more risky on his end, he's making a giant monster movie considering the fact that these types of movies don't do well here in the states, unless it's in parody form.
I firmly believe 1/18/08 will cause people to do a double-take and take notice - though if it manages to do more than that, then luck is trully on our side. Imagine - TOHO takes note of it and decides to apply a similar, *perfected* hollywood touch to Godzilla 2013.....for us kaiju fans, I think that's about all we need, right?
