The explanation at the end of the Watchman movie doesn't matter, what matters is that the book Watchmen is directly tied to how dense it is. It's about all these little details and they keep piling up and a piling and you wonder if all this is going anywhere and then everything manages to tie together in the last act and it's just breathtaking.
That's what make the comic good. Without that, and add the fact that Snyder shot everything to look sexy and cool (instead of awkward and sad, missing the point entirely), and every single thing that's interesting about Watchman is stripped away in the film adaptation.
