I understand why Azog SHOULD have been Bolg, but they had to dedicate this film to Azog because Bolg has to be the villain in the next films.

I'm fine with it, I just find it ironic that the people who were sticking up for PJ's decision to stretch it into a trilogy are the ones who are complaining about it, while myself (who took huge issue with the trilogy idea) thought it was handled surprisingly great.

So people are kind of saying this movie didn't do as well as expected. It's a new record holder, making over 86 million it's opening weekend, but somehow that isn't enough?

I did kind of expect more, but it's hardly a failure.

Apparently it is the highest grossing opening of the series (premium ticket prices like IMAX/HFR/3D), but in terms of actual attendance, it was the lowest attended film.

http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2012/12/the ... ice-top-10

Still, 84 million opening isn't bad even though it isn't Avengers or TDKR (and who thought it would be?)

I have a feeling it'll stick around and do pretty well for a long time over the Christmas/New Years time. I remember the first Narnia movie coming in to slightly disappointing numbers, but it was in theaters forever because people just kept seeing it and it ended up doing very good over time.

Maybe it turns out that the internet community can be a good guage of what to do with films after all.

John Carter crashed and burned at the box office after being the whipping boy on the internet. It was a joke even before it was released.

The Hobbit, again, has been the source of jokes for several months now.

I can honestly say, I'd be a lot more psyched if it had been one film. I would be there on the opening day for that.

I can't wait to see the eventual fan edit of the trilogy into one film.

I think the "lessened success" has a lot to do with the LOTR trilogy's time kind of having come and gone.

Unfortunately, in our current world, 9 years is a LONG time to go from one thing to another.

Also, I'd say it being a prequel is a big part....I know it's not being advertised as part one of a trilogy (and for good reason, every single person I've spoken with who expressed interest in the movie was IMMEDIATELY soured when I told them it was just part one of three), but it IS being advertised as "Before the Lord of the Rings". So, people are wary of prequels.

I really can't help but wonder what will happen by the time part 3 rolls around...I'm thinking the average movie-goer will be thinking, "What?! Haven't they done a BUNCH of these already?!?" (I could also see some people not realizing that part 3 is part 3 and being angered and confused when they are lost...this is a much smaller portion of people, though)

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

I don't see how somebody can say the Nolan trilogy is closer to Star Wars level than Lord of the Rings.

I just...I can't.
