I wonder how much of that can be attributed to the rise in ticket prices, as well as 3-D/IMAX tickets being way more expensive than normal.

Just a thought, but just watched a bootleg...er I mean a friend did. And while I still overall like the movie, when you take away the 3d IMAX element, the story really IS hamfisted and contrived. Spose you could say the same thing for Titanic. In retrospect I think more of the film is a technical achievement and has great action. Story wise, like others said, hardly Oscar-worthy.

A bit off topic, but I think James Cameron is going crazy. He's announced he's releasing Titanic in 3-D. Right, because when I think of movies that need to be in 3-D, I think of f*cking Titanic. Not only that, but Cameron just said like last week that he thought converting 2D films into 3D was a waste of time. Hypocrisy much? I guess it doesn't matter if you're going to make millions of dollars. He's also trying to get Avatar re-released later this year with extra footage. He and George Lucas should get together.

^ I agree, I can't wait until this fad dies out (again). I haven't seen a single 3D film that benefited from being 3D.

Finally saw this earlier tonight, and it was the extended DVD cut in 2-D.

Great movie. Not an original story in the slightest, but still a solid, tightly-constructed action flick. The characters are cool, the effects work is spectacular and the action sequences are some of the best in recent memory.

I remember reading a lot of hype before this came out to the effect of 'Avatar is going to change the future of cinema' and 'Movies will never be the same again.' I saw a commercial for the Yogi Bear movie during the Cowboys game that boasted a giant 'IN 3D' caption on the screen. I think the future of cinema may have been better off had Avatar not changed things forever.
