Hey I love the Graham Williams era! :)

Even HORNS OF NIMON is hugely entertaining (Not that I think the era was all roses.... THE INVISIBLE ENEMY and UNDERWORLD have always been almost unwatchable to me!),
but Williams gave us THE SUNMAKERS, RIBOS OPERATION, STONES OF BLOOD, etc etc,,, and lets not forget THE CITY OF DEATH, widely thought to be the finest WHO of all time! :)

On Roberts point I'd like to add that Who is similar to Goji in a way. The stories and eras you mentioned to me parallel Goji currently. That is, when you have had so many episodes(or movies) of a certain character, the greater public will lose interest. And then the business types force varied different approaches. Often times they try to much and the show varies wildly from year to year. Perhaps why I love most of the JNT era, is that initially it had its own feel, and as Michael Grade or whomever got more pissed, the stories got more out there. (In Gojis case, since destroyah, how many different continuities have we seen? Or directors? Hell GINO was part of this search for the mainstream base)
And as you said often the concept needs a break.(Heck Trek needs one, and to forever ban the current producers) It's just too bad the 96 Who movie was so bad, as like GINO w/ the right writer/angle it could have started a new series.

But kinda like BSG, looks likle they've found the right combo w/ the new Who.
On a side note looks like I'm in a minority again-I actually liked Eric Roberts as the Master. Strangely enough I also liked Jonathan Pryce in the "Curse" spoof-he kinda looked like Delgado! Keep in mind I am The Master so I know a good villain when I see one!

FACTION PARADOX

Postby Shonokin » Tue Apr 26, 2005 9:16 pm

About Faction Paradox:

From the Kaldor City : "The Faction Paradox audios are powerful, Gothic stories which feature characters and concepts originally created for the BBC's critically-acclaimed Doctor Who novels by Lawrence Miles. Revolving around the war-torn saga of a mysterious time-travelling organisation which is part cult, part crime syndicate and part conspiracy, the audios can be enjoyed on their own or as part of the extensive range of Faction Paradox books, comics, art and online media."

From the Faction Paradox : It's never easy, explaining Faction Paradox in a single line. It's been described as a criminal syndicate, with agents operating in every civilisation from the first to the last; as an all-purpose guerrilla organisation, intent on overthrowing the order of history-in-general rather than any specific government; as a fetishistic death-cult, whose members remain utterly unaware of its founder's true intentions; as a secret army, preparing for the day when it can launch a mass crusade against any other bloodline that stands in its way; even as a conspiracy of monsters, whose purpose is to stir up a War in Heaven and then pick over the ruins. And none of these descriptions are entirely untrue, although all of them fall short of the mark.

The things you come across once your interest gets re-piqued in a subject. I had this kinda weird feeling of scratching the surface of a secret world when reading about "spinoffs" of Doctor Who. Of which I had only ever seen the Sarah Jane and K-9 pilot. But folks kept mentioning "" and I had no idea what it was and never had the time (can we consider that a pun?) to look it up.

Well I looked it up some but still feel like I'm just scratching the surface, or missing something. So maybe somebody can help me with this.

If the Faction Paradox started in the Who novels, when exactly was it and what was their relation to the Doctor/Time Lords/Sontarans and so on. But maybe that's too broad of a question seeing as how there seems to be a lot of "history" (another pun!) to this group (and it's stories/audios/books), so I'll just ask for opinions.

I'll be listening to the first audio tomorrow and am just wondering if there's anyone else here that has followed this spin-off and if you think it's truly worth following.

It's sort of fascinating isn't it Robert? Almost a Lovecraftian feel to the whole thing. Secret societies or individuals living just below the skin of our universe, messing around with Fate in whatever chaotic or purposeful manner. Weapons made of shadow, time travel through magic, etc.

I found out a bit more on Faction Paradox: They first show up in the Miles-written (eighth) Doctor Who book Alien Bodies (which apparently is rare? since I can't find it for less than $20) and are featured in The Ancestor Cell, Unnatural History, and Interference.

It seems that once the FP spinoffs were outside of the BBC's hands there was some re-naming (maybe for copyright issues?) so that now the Time Lords are "The Great Houses". But other names such as "Sontarans" are still intact, as well as the general look.

Though many of the subordinats (heroes) of the new FP stories are human or something close, the actual originating House of Faction Paradox is what? Renegade Time Lords? I'm not sure if it's that or they come from a completely different race/species. Maybe someone who's read Alien Bodies would know? I understand that in the Who novels they were the bad guys, considered time terrorists, out to mess up linear time in whatever way they could... creating "paradoxes", trying to subjegate the Doctor in various evil ways and eventually becoming murderers.

Also, they are/were involved in a time war which destroys Gallifrey. I'm guessing the books are not cannon to the TV series or visa versa, but it's interesting to see these refereces to something that we know is coming in the new series.

Edit: . Neato!
