Great movie, and exactly the kind of side-step the superpower movie genre needed amid the ongoing stream of competent (but rarely brilliant) major franchise adaptations. The story ably walks the fine line of being simple without becoming simplistic, and the characters come across as real people. I can't believe this only had a $12M budget, considering the scale of destruction in the final act.

Other than the cool effects, I wasn't really sold on this one from the trailers...but we ended up seeing it and I thought it was pretty dang good! Much better than expected. I feared it would be 90min. of douche bag teens acting out with their powers, but it turned out to be so much more than that...with good characters that I actually felt something for. Kudos for a movie that changes my opinion 180*!

From Screenrant

[quote]“I saw an opportunity to be able to blend a couple of different things that I’ve always wanted to approach as a filmmaker. The themes of coming of age stories like Stand By Me or Lucas…and superhero genre films and also horror films like Carrie and films like Akira and to really sort of take all of those different elements and combine them into a reality-based story…â€

I can't wait to rent this. Hopefully it's as good as people have been saying.

It was mostly Irvin Kirshner that made Empire what it was. He was fighting an uphill battle with Lucas arguing against a lot of the great things that made it into the movie.

Lucas didn't even want Han to say "I know."
