Just got back. This movie was f*cking awesome! This has to be one of the best action movies I've seen in years. The Raid has better fight scenes (after all, it IS a kung fu movie), but I found myself more immersed in the story here. Both are great and both have VERY similar premises (which was actually an accident- both movies were filming at the same time!). Basically Dredd and this girl that looks like a living anime character get locked into a massive complex full of criminals and gangsters. The plot is fairly light, but executed wonderfully.
I was especially surprised this came out so good cuz (from what I remember), didn't the director get fired from post or something? Things like that almost NEVER end up good in the end, but this movie overcame that. I'm really curious to know more about the behind the scenes drama here, but info seems scarce right now... I'm sure we'll learn more within the next few months.
Karl Urban was great as Dredd and I loved that he never took his helmet off. If he wasn't already Judge Dredd, I'd say he'd be perfect for the next Batman.
I got a big old school John Carpenter vibe from it. The score, the atmosphere, the action, the look, etc. were all very Escape From New York/Assault on Precinct 13.
The first thing I said to my friends when we left was "Wow, that was like the movie John Carpenter would make if he still made good movies!"
HIGHLY recommended!
OH, and guys on the first page saying this is a Nolan-rip off... couldn't be further from the truth. This is an over the top b-movie full of crazy set pieces and action movie machismo... pretty much the opposite of Nolan's Bat-films. SO PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT!
Also, I usually don't care one way or another about 3-D, but this has some of the very best 3D I've ever seen... AT LEAST on par with Prometheus. Its one of the rare cases where I felt the 3D was worth the extra price.
Go see it already!
