If you skipped that to avoid (semi) spoilers, this was in the middle, so avoid the white-out :

Reviewer says that Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and her brother Roger, are now a married couple, with Carolyn and David as their children. But, imdb listing still has them listed with different last names, so the reviewer, who admits he knows nothing about Dark Shadows, doesn't know what he's talking about.

The characters were somewhat consolidated in the 90's revival series, but if what the reviewer says is true, it's even more so here, but then again, it's a 2 hour movie versus a daily soap and the canon has always been very loosely played with between movies and remakes.

But then, you always need to consider the source at aintitcool.com.

I wonder if any of the original music themes will be adapted, as once again Burton is using Elfman to score the movie.

I know of Elfman from his days in Oingo Boingo, and going to all their awesome Halloween concerts here in SoCal in the 80's, and his segue into scoring was welcome and fun back in the day, but familiarity is breeding...well, I won't say "contempt", but I WILL say..."what, Elfman AGAIN?" :?

I hope he at least tried to derive from the old themes, they are as important a part of Dark Shadows as anything.

Well I saw it.

:|

Um.

It looks like fun, but...well...they are clearly going the comedic route. Barnabas reveals himself to his family, although maybe it's something that happens later in the film. So...who the heck knows. Definitely not what I was picturing, but I'll give it a chance.

Looks like what you'd expect. No surprises in tone really. Meh

Well, the surprise in tone is the excessive comedy which is really nowhere in the old show. I expected some humor, just not so much.

I will say it went further, and more low-brow, than I thought it would into humor like when Depp makes a comment about Eva Green's ample chest area...

I also thought Depp would play it straight, and that the comedy would come from how he intereacted with the "modern" world, and while that is there, it seems he's still a major source of comedy too.

Hmm, these comments do not surprise me.... :?

I'd have seen this earlier, I just got in from having needles stuck in me, laid up at an outpatient center all afternoon. (ouch  )

Downloading the HD sucker right now (175 mb), so I'll know in a few minutes what you guys already know.

As far as the humor on the old show, all of it is unintentional, and you can't transpose that to a movie, the buzzing flies, the malfunctioning sets and props, the flubbed lines, but that was all forgivable considering the rushed soap opera format. And very endearing, too. None of that made you love the show any less, in fact quite the opposite. At least they took themselves seriously enough to never wink at the camera, even in the most outrageous of bloopers.

EDIT---- Okay, I just saw it. :?

So Barnabas saves the family and the family business. Oh, please.

The 1972 angle is fine, I guess, but they're really playing that up for big laughs ...disco balls, lava lamps, SEVEN FOOT TALL lava lamps, 70's pop, the Carpenters, one liners.... I guess it's just another take on it that will have to coexist with everything else.

Not only is everyone winking at the camera, but they're mugging at it.

(I can take Burton or leave him.....I'll watch this thing, I'll probably laugh, but it's just a diversion, nothing more.)

My only hope for this is that I come out of this more entertained than I was during Alice in Wonderland. I don't even mind some of this humor, but if it is as prevalent as it is in the trailer, then the disparity of tone is just too great.

Though I still think I'll have some fun from the film, my gf, on the other hand, has dubbed it a "trainwreck" from the getgo.

She's probably right.
