Ian Malcolm was said to have died in the original novel, but his death was ret-conned in the sequel. And while I'm on the subject I would like to say that while it is enjoyable, I find Spielburg's Jurassic Park to be a tad overrated and vastly inferior to Michael Crichton's novel. I would also like to say that Spielburg's sequel - The Lost World - is pretty enjoyable for what it is. It's not great (certainly nowhere near its predecessor), but hardly deserving of all the abuse heaped onto it.

Jurassic Park the novel really is a different kind of animal. Not so different as to require a readaptation, but it has a different feel than the film.

I'm a big fan of vintage Speilberg. He's especially great if you can watch the films with a bit of historical perspective on when they were released. JAWS is amazing, E.T. is a well-above-average family film (with sentimental 80's nostalgia to boot). Close Encounters is a masterpiece. And it's one of the few films out there where I actually prefer the final director's cut that was put together decades after the original release (though I am SOOO greatful the he didn't try to prevent all three versions from being properly released on bluray!).

Raiders of the Lost Ark is easily in my Top 10 movies ever made and I enjoy all the sequels. I love ToD, you have to understand they were intentionally going for the cheesy "evil cult" 1930's serial feel and intentionally made it wildly different in tone from the first, which I appreciate. The atmosphere is just fantastic. TLC feels a bit like a rehash of the first, but the chemistry between Ford & Connery is so great that it overcomes any issues. And KOTCS I enjoy much the way I enjoy the JP sequels (or a lackluster Godzilla movie...): they're poorly written and very subpar, but they're still fun romps with a character(s) [those in the JP sequels being the dinos themselves] I've come to really enjoy and they still have some bright spots that make them worth watching from time to time.

And Jurassic Park came out when I was 10. I knew very little about it going in, but I LOVED dinosaurs & it utterly blew me away! I had so many of those toys! Despite its flaws and the fact that it's drastically different from the (great) book, it is still a fantastic summer "popcorn" movie that I can watch any time. As I already mentioned, the sequels are guilty pleasures.

As for the rest of his work, Minority Report was decent, but not all that memorable and War of the Worlds was interesting but very flawed. I haven't seen Saving Private Ryan in a LOOOONG time, but I remember liking it pretty well. The rest I either had no interest in seeing or they didn't stand out enough for me to even remember to be able to talk about them.

While Indy 4 was fun enough for what it was, it really was a bad movie, nowhere near on the caliber of any of the '80s films. That dud aside, Spielberg is one of my favorite directors. Jurassic Park is my all-time favorite movie, and I thought the The Lost World was a very worthy sequel. When I discovered internet message boards years ago, it was mind-boggling to realize how many people seem to hate it. War of the Worlds '05 was great too. The ending with the kid surviving was lame, but the rest of the movie is a top-notch alien invasion thriller.

Jaws, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, The Color Purple, Munich, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, Minority Report, The Terminal... Spielberg is the man. I'm looking forward to The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn.

Oh, yes, The Color Purple.

I wasn't in the mood for it when I started watching it, and by the scene where Mister throws Nettie out, one of the most heartwrenching things I ever saw in a movie, I was hooked.

Yes, it's gratuitously manipulative and probably too sugar-coated, especially considering the history and setting, but even so, what a story.

(When I say I gave away CE3K, keep in mind that I've seen it countless times since 1978. Some movies you just can't watch even one more time. And of course there are scenes from the movie burned into my memory forever.)

I've always felt that Spielberg is one of the most overrated directors ever. Apart from a handful of films, most of the stuff he's done has either bored me or annoyed me with it's obvious pretentiousness. And he's only gotten worse as the years have gone by. I'll take Cronenberg or Lynch anyday over Spielberg.

None of them are near me at all. I'd have to leave the state

I'd legitimately love to see Raiders on the big screen since that's really the only Indy movie I love.
