And what has Del Toro done that was good other than Hellboy II? I mean, Blade II sucked and Pan's Labyrinth was all right, but I expected much more out of it.
As for Alice in Wonderland, I am split on my thoughts. On one hand, it was a fantastic movie, with gorgeous visuals, and it is the first Alice in Wonderland adaptation that has actually had a plot. The others I have seen (minus the Alice minseries) were pretty much just randomized scenes with no semblance of a plot. This one gave a plot to the story and it was a good plot. On the other hand, it pains me to say it, but Depp was not up to par. He just did not fit as the Mad Hatter, because this is the first role of his I did not enjoy. Plus, what is the difference between the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts? Aren't they suppose to be two different people? Was Helena the Red Queen or the Queen of Hearts? I am confused on this part. I did love Anne Hathaway as the White Queen though, and the Chesire Cat was spot on, but he needed more screen time. Of course, he never seems to have much screen time in any adaptation, which is strange considering he is supposed to be the most popular character in the series. In the long run, I enjoyed the movie despite its flaws, and it is definitely the best movie of the year thus far, but it is far from Burton's best. I give it a 4/5 nonetheless.
