Yes, giant monster!

Funny thing is, I remember (to bring this back OT!) a rumor about 4 months ago about a "giant monster stomping through the city" scenario related to The Runaway Bride. Looks like the rumor was true, but they got the show wrong.

Some who've seen it think the creature above is The Beast from "The Satan Pit". Maybe? If The Beast was Satan, and The Void is Hell, and The Rift is a path to The Void, well.... I'm out of capital letters.

About the "Torchwood" kaiju

Postby Enshohma » Fri Dec 29, 2006 8:00 pm

Its kind of nice to know that in this day and age of 'improved effects' we can get giant monsters more often on the new Doctor Who series, and now it looks like Torchwood has one.

From "Rose"-to-"The Runnaway Bride" we've had the Jagrafess, the Beast, and to lesser extents the "THEM!" sized Reapers and those manta ray like creatures at the beginning of "Army of Ghosts"

And now this massive guy, who has a strange mantis like head from what I can see here. Hope its something substantial, as opposed to the briefly seen "Buffy" dragon flying by. The UK need more giants.

And yes, I'm well familiar with giant monsters in the classic series, like the Drashings, Kroll, the K-1 Robot, Azel the Deamon, the Mara (snake form), Kronos the Chronovore, various dinosaurs, the sentient Exxilon City, the Mandragora Helix, the Great Vampire, the Macra crabs, the Krynoids, and the Spider Queen of Metebelis Three... see, am not that bad of a newbie! ;)

CSO plus bonus false perspective model tank! LOL

But, damn, I can't wait for that one on DVD. I feel soooo nostalgic when I watch it. Unfortunately, I can barely sit through my cruddy VHS (4 DW stories per tape at EP) any longer. DVD has spoiled me, big time.

Yeah ROBOT was my first DW experience and it would be cool to see some more in-depth extras for such a release. But the composit effects were truly aweful. Neat looking robot though.

I was just reading somewhere about that forced perspective tank and in the article it said it was toy from the "Action Man" toy series and not even a real prop. Whether that's true or not, I don't know.

That giant monster in the pic looks to me a bit like the werewolf from E2-S2, Tooth and Claw, which of course has the origin of Torchwood.

(spoiler whited out ahead)
Looking forward to the Sontaran Experiment especially since it's on the cheap (of course just being two episodes it should be a bit cheaper). Always liked the Sontarans (loved their surprize entrance in The Invasion of Time), though they never got used very well in their BBC Who appearances. They tend to have a bit more character in the BBV radio shows and FACTION PARADOX Protocols; The Eleven Day Empire and the fan video SHAKEDOWN (which is probably one of my favorite Sontoran character studies).

The Sycorax indeed have potential, and they were underused in their first appearence so I'd like to see them back. The only other really memorable new monsters from the new series wouldn't work recurring (The Empty Child, Clockwork Droids, The Beast).

The constant mentions of the Slitheen are definetely "huh?" inducing. The two mentions of the Gelth worked quite well because it made sense in the story. Either RTD is super-duper proud of his creations or he's just teasing the Who fanbase that hates them. I don't hate them, but they were definetly un-inspiring.

Having now seen the end of Torchwood Season 1 all I can say is: You certainly find a lot of things buried beneath the earth these days.

For those that want to know what the hell that giant monster is (Spoiler):

That giant thing is "technically" another aspect of "The Beast" sort of, maybe, since it is called Abaddon in Torchwood and that name was listed as one of the names of "The Beast".
